HOWER, Henry of South Whitley died 16 December 1901 aged 68-7-28. He was born near Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pa. on 18 April 1833 to George and Mary Hower. He was the fifth son in a family of nine children. His father moved . the family- to Whitley County, Indiana in June, 1841. He was married by the Rev. Anderson Parrett on 4 October 1854 to Elizabeth Parish. She died on 13 January 1893. Children: . Mrs. N.N. Emerson of Marion, Indiana; Mrs. Maritta Robbins and George Hower of South Whitley, Indiana.


SHUEY, Simon known as Simon Shuler was killed at a railroad crossing on 17 December 1901. The place was in South Whitley, Indiana.

BROWN, Mrs. J.J., daughter of the late Samuel Rouch, died at her home near Central Point, Oregon on 26 December 1901. On 17 March 1901 she became 29 years of age. She was married on 10 September 1-891. She moved to Oregon two years ago. She left a daughter aged 9 years, a son aged 6 years and a boy who was born 1 December 1901.


IRELAND, Mrs. Silas of Berrien Springs, Michigan died and was buried 6 January 1902. Dr. S.A. Ireland of Washington Court House, Ohio attended the funeral.


KLINCK, Elizabeth (nee Hornaday) died 30 December 1901 at the home of Mrs. S. S. Miller, a daughter living in Columbia City, Ind. She was born on 23 December 1816 in Randolph County, N.C. and was 6 years old when her father moved the family to Fayette Co., Indiana." On 6 August 1839 she married Gideon T.Klinck who soon moved to a homestead in Illinois. Later this land was, ex- changed for land in Whitley County, . Indiana which was - exchanged for a farm in Thorncreek Township, same county. Here she lived for over 50 years . Her husband died about 8 years ago. The children of this union were: Anna Z. who married Samuel S. Mil- ler, Elizabeth K. who. married .James Waugh and Horace S. who was a member of Co. B, 74th Indiana, Volunteer Infantry. He- was. wounded at Chickamauga and in the following December death re- sulted because of these wounds. ( Burials in the Stough Cemetery, Thorncreek Township, Whitley County, Indiana) .:


EISSELE, David, a native of Wittenberg, Germany, was born on 27 March 1839 and died 12 January 1902 at his home in Columbia City, Indiana where he had lived nearly 25 years. When he was 12 years of age his parents-came to the United State and located in Michigan. ""His wife died 5- months ago. Two sons and two daughters survived him. The sons were named. Charles and Frank. Delphi Borket was one of the daughters.


WALKER, William T. who lived in Union Township, Whitley County, Indiana, died 13 January 1902 aged 76 years.


MOORE, Jacob, son of Alexander Noore of Unich Township, whitley County, Indiana, died cwhile on a visit with. his, father. He married in Kansas City, Missouri to which place his body was shipped ac- companied by his wife. He was aged 27-4-25 and had one son. He was a graduate of Purdue University. Death was caused by pneumonia which followed measles. (Columbia City Commercial issued 22 Jan- uary 1902)


ECOS, Rose died 20 January 1902 at the home of her parents, mr. and urs. Julius Hoos in Columbia City, Indiana. She was aged 23-10-11 and had come here with her parents from Ionia County, Michigan about twenty years ago. A sister lived in Michigan. Her brothers, william, Theodore and George lived in Columbia City.


GAFF, William was born in Stark County, Ohio on 10 July 1822. He came to Whitley County, Indiana in 1839 but returned to his native county. In 1843 he located in Whitley County, Indiana near Shriner Lake. On this trip he, steered a canal-boat from Cleveland to To- ledo. He fell dead on 25 January 1902. The Rev. P.Winebrenner was in charge of the funeral service held in the Thorncreek Chris- tian Church. His wife and four children are dead.


HULBARGER, William met death by accident on 29 January 1902. he had lived near the Foster School in Thorncreek Township, whitley County , Indiana. Enroute to Columbia City with a load of wood to be de- livered to Grant Strieby, the tailor, his horses became frightened near the Ben Clugston farm situated one mile west of town. Mir. Humbarger fell and the rear, wagon wheel ran over his head. The horses stopped at the Widup corner in Columbia City. (Buried in the . Stough Cemetery) He was aged 39 years.


NELSON, Adam died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alfred Hosack on 23 January 1902, aged 85-7-12. His surviving children were: mrs. J. M. Fowler, Churubusco, Indiana; . mrs. Alfred Hosack, Columbia City, Indiana; Mrs. J.W.Johnson, Princeton, Indiana .:


FARNER, Mrs. Susan of Thorncreek Township, Whitley County, India -died. this morning aged 79 years. Her husband has been dead many . years. She was an aunt of Capt. D.N.Hart. She was born 31 Decem- ber 1822. in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. When she was 8 years of age her parents moved to Ashland County, Ohio. She married Joseph Farner .on 30 . November and moved to Wyandotte County, Ohio thence to DeKalb County,. Indiana. . They came to Whitley County, Indiana in 1868 where she died on 29 January 1902 aged 80 years and 29 days. Her husband has been dead for 23 years. Her maiden name was Hart and she was one of 15 children. Two brothers, Isaac Hart of Denver, Colorado and John Hart of Hicksville, Ohio survived her. Her funeral service was in the Thorncreek Bethel church on 31st of January. Elders Fleck and Komp officiated. She was buried in the Egolf Ceme- tery adjoining the church. Her will, dated 21 June 1900 was executed by her nephew, D. N.Hart. Sums of money were left to three churches. She was a member of the Church of God for 50 years .


RUCH, Sarah ( nee Fertig), a resident of Columbia City, Indiana . for 47. years, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alfred Hea- cock. She was born in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania in July, 1819 and was aged 82 years, 6 months. On 4 December 1838 she mer - ried Charles Ruch (now deceased) and in October 1845 they moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana where they lived until. march 1849 when they settled in Smith Township, Whitley County, Indiana. She was the mother of 13 children. These children survived her: Wrs. margaret Loudy, Albert F., Joseph H. , George W., Jacob A. and Mrs. Alfred . Heacock. She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church.

CREAGER, Peter died 6 February 1902 at his home- in Washington Township, Whitley County, Indiana. He was born on 26 April 1829 in Montgomery County, Ohio. He moved to Whitley County, Indiana with his parents. He was first married on 1 January 1854 to me - lissa Williamson who died 25 December 1865 . Melissa had three children. On 30 August 1866 he married Margaret Chamberlain who became the mother of two children. He had been a county commis- sioner. He was. buried in the Eberhart Cemetery.


BROWN, Timothy died 6 February 1902 near Bartlett, Kansas at the home of his daughter, Mirs. H.C.Hively. He was buried in the Luke Creek Cemetery near Chetopa, Kansas. He was born. 4 February 1824 in Knox County, Ohio and was a son of Isaiah Brown. He married Mary Pond on 4 November 1846 in Chio and moved to Whitley County, Indiana-in 1852 .. His wife died in 1892 aged. 63-9-10 after which he went. to Kansas to live with his children. There were four children: Isaiah, Jay (died aged 5 years), Vallona (wife of H.C. Hively) and Alice (died aged 11 years) .


.. KING, F. M .. died in February, 1902 at his home on East VanBuren St., ; Columbia City, Indiana, aged. about 42. years. He- had suffered a stroke of apoplexy. He was survived by his wife, 3 children, 2 brothers and one sister. His wife's maiden name was Garrison.


COVERSTONE,. Samuel a resident of Thorncreek Township, Whitley County, Indiana died leaving these children: Rose, Will( of Col- umbia City, Indiana), mrs. Joseph Creager and Mrs. Omeda Egolf . ( wife, of Homer Egolf of Chicago, Ill.) ( Issue dated 19 Feb. 1902)


MOSIER, John, a native of Baden, Germany, born 18 March 1838 ex- pired suddenly. At age of 17 years came to the United States at which time two of his brothers, George and Michael, were living in New Albany, Indiana. . In February, 1884 he married 2nd, Mrs. Anna Stingle of Lafayette, Indiana. In March, 1888 they. located in Columbia City, Indiana. He was a tailor. There were 2 daugh- · ters born of the first marriage: Mrs. James Norell of San Francisco, California and Mrs. Frank Aker of Arcola, Indiana .. Six sons were born of the 2nd marriage: Lewis, George, Edward, Albert and Will ( all' live in Chicago) and John of Topeka, Kansas. Burial was in Greenhill Cemetery, Columbia. City. ( Issue dated 26 Feb. 1902)


SHEADLE, . Oliver aged about 55 years died of cancer of the stom- ach . He came to Whitley County, Indiana about 35 years ago. He left three daughters: Mrs. Elmer Bear, Goldie ( aged 14) and Lucy ( aged 12) . His funeral service was in charge of the Rev. Mcclellan of the Church of God. Burial was in the Egolf. Ceme- tery. .( Issue dated 5 March 1902


PRESSLER, Lydia, widow of John, died just outside the city limits on Sunday ( March 2., 1902) aged 72 years. She was born in Perry County, Chio on 6 March 1830. Her maiden name was Humbarger. She had lived in Whitley. County, Indiana for- about 55 years. Her first husband was John King by whom she had three. children: Reuben, Elizabeth ( married Staples) and Matilda ( married Hively) . There were three children born of the 2nd marriage: william Pressler, Amanda and Emanuel ( of Tipton, Ind. ) . John, her hus- band died about 16 years ago. Her funeral service was in the Egolf Church in Thorncreek Township. The Rev. Parker officiated.


NORRIS, Margaret died in Richland Township, Whitley County, Ind. on 3 March 1902 aged 78-10-15. Her husband, Marcus Norris died about 20 years ago. He was. a brother of the late irs. Richard Knisely. She left two sons and two daughters. She was an early settler. The Rev. D. W. Sanders officiated at her funeral.


-COOPER, Mrs. Benjamin died at her home in Etna Township, Whitley County, Indiana and was buried in. the Buckles Cemetery. She was about 60 years of age. ( Issue of 12 March 1902)


MOSHER, Mrs. S.T. died at. her home in Columbia City, Indiana aged 72-5-12. She was born in Muskingum County, Ohio. This couple had lived in Columbia Township, whitley County, Indianaf for 65 years. Her funeral service in charge of the Rev. Ford was in the Methodist church. She was buried in the South Park Cemetery. She is survived by eight children: Mrs .. A .. Hawn, L C Mosher, H. L.Mosher, W. J. Mosher, C. B. Mosher, E. E. Mosher, Rosanna and Phoebe. : She was born 30 October 1829 and was married on . 27 November 1847.


SECRIST, Agnes M. died 6 March 1902 aged 48-11-4. She was born - 2 April 1853 and married William Secrist on 28 July 18.70. She had five children. One daughter is. deceased. Funeral. service - was held in Etna, Indiana and. in charge of the Rev. J. W. Rendel. She was buried in the Metz Cemetery. She had been a member of the Dunkard Church for 32 years.


NAUK, Francis Marion (known as. Major Mauk) was born .- 9 . December . 1844 on a farm in Fairfield County, Chio. He died in Fort Wayne, Indiana, aged 57-3-6. He had been ill since. last May 26 th. His father moved to Kirkersville, Ohio (Licking County, Ohio) and became station agent. for the Ohio Central R.R. When. F.m. was 17 years of age he. enlisted. and became, one of the Ohio Squirrel Hunters sent to. repel Morgan's invasion. For several months was stationed at. Columbus, Ohio .. He was discharged by . Gov. Tod then enlisted again and was in Co.H, 88 Ohio. Regiment. After the war his father moved to Columbia City, Indiana but. F.M. remained in Ohio' and became a brakeman on the Ohio Central R.R. He came to Indiana and helped in building the Eel River R.R. then became a yardmaster at Dennison, Indiana. His next position was as freight brakeman with the Pennsylvania R.R. He served

ten years as a freight conductor and 17 as a passenger conductor. On 22 April 1873 he married Robina Fry of Fort Wayne. Several of his brothers and sisters are living. He was a- 32 degree Mason and a member of the Baptist Church. His funeral- service - was in the First Baptist Church in Fort Wayne-, Indiana and the Rev. Field officiated. He was buried in the Lindenwood Gemetery. . His title was a nickname given to him when a young man because of the military character of his name. mrs. Sidney Yontz of Columbia City, Indiana was his sister. He died between the 12th and 19th of march, 1902.


GRAVES, Almina aged 55-1-19 died at her home situated one mile east of Coesse, Indiana , Friday at noon. She was the widow of Henry Graves. She left to children, Will Graves and Mrs. Cass Bump, both of Whitley County, Indiana. Her funeral was held in the Coesse Methodist church and burial was in the Lutheran Cemetery located just north of the village.


SWIGART, Ira Albert aged 35-5-12, died 12 March 1902 at his home in Deskoines, Iowa where he had .lived for nine years. For eight years had been employed by the Iowa Pipe and Oil Company. He.is survived by his wife, 2 small children, 5 brothers and his aged father.


SIVELY, Mrs. Charles (nee Mary Della VanHouten) aged 49 years fell headlong into a .pan of boiling sugar water. This is the coroner's report. . (Issue of 2 April 1902) .


CROWELL, William aged .60, found dead in bed with a bullet hole in the right temple. His wife had risen to get breakfast. She heard the shot about. 6.10 A. M. but thought it was a window shut- ter. The gun was found lying on his stomach. He wore his night clothes plus a collar and tie. No motive was known. This was on Monday morning, probably 31 march, 1902.


BLAIN, James,' died on Saturday at his home in Troy Township, Whitley County, Indiana, aged 78 years. He was born 15 Nov - ember: 1823 in Highland County, Ohio to Alexander Blain and wife who were natives of Pennsylvania and of Irish descent. In, 1841 his parents came to Noble County, Ind. to that. part which later became Etna Township, Whitley County. .. In Decem- ber 1844 he married Jene Scott whose parents had located in Etna Township. in 1836. In 1847 he and his wife moved into a log house on a farm in Troy Township. This house stands near his late residence and is use as a henhouse. They had 12 child- ren., seven survived him. The children: Scott Blain and Mrs. Templeton of Chicago, Ill .; Melvin, Mrs. Ida Grant, both- of- Columbia City, Indiana; Mrs .. Della Buckles of Noble- County, Ind. and Roxy Blain and Mrs. Mary Kiester of Troy Township, Whitley County, Indiana. James Blain remembered watching Indians smoke their long-stemmed pipes. RICHARDS, Lewis- had gone to Chicago- in a freight car with a- stallion which he was- selling or trading. His body was ' found 100 yards beyond the South Chicago depot .. The train- on which he rode was standing still. His- leg was broken and his face and hands were lacerated .. His money and watch were on his person. Word came Saturday A.M. and Ed, his son went as soon as possible. He was born in France on 24 March 1846. In 1871 came to the U.S. with his parents who settled in Washington Township, Whitley County, Indiana.

On 23 April 1874 married Hulda Stallsmith. He was a Baptist. He and his family had lived in Columbia City, Indiana for ten years.

BERRY, Dr. Charles H. died Friday at his late residence at the corner of Market and Line Streets. in Columbia City, Indiana. He was born on 15 October 1842 at Lake Mahopac, Putnam County, New York. He was a graduate of Ann Arbor, Class of 1868. He died 22 March 1902. On El October.1889 , the front wheels of the buggy in which he was riding, parted. He was thrown out on his head and paralysis developed. This happened in-Chicago where he had opened an office in 1880. He was twice married but had no children. He married 2nd, Mirs. Lee of Garrett, Indiana on 29 June 1898. In September, 1900 they moved to Columbia City. His burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Chicago. His full name was Charles . Hazard Berry.


CLEVENGER, Susan A. (nee Halderman) was born on 11 September 1825 in Preble County, Ohio and on 31 December 1844 became the wife of Samuel B.Clevenger of the same county. In 1852 they moved to Wabash County thence to Whitley County, Indiana. in 1868. They located in Larwill where she died on 23 March 1902. Her six children survived her: J.A. Clevenger of N. manchester, Indiana; H.S. and Lewis Clevenger of Larwill, Indiana; J.D. Clevenger of Chicago, Illinois; wary E. Swindell of Plymouth, Indiana and Lizzie Firestone of Larwill, Indiana. A brother, Daniel Halderman lived in Marshall County, Indiana and another named Lewis lived in Larwill, Indiana.


CRAMAR, Mrs. Samuel aged 66 years died suddenly on Tuesday morn- ing. She lived on the John Jackson farm in Richland Township, Whitley County, Indiana .and leaves a husband and 8 children. She was married in 1860.Her funeral service was held in the Troy Presbyterian Church and burial was in the adjoining cemetery. ( Issue of 2 April 1902).


- BENNETT, Catherine, wife of Simon, died at: Laud on Thursday. Buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, Whitley. County, Indiana. ( Issue of/ 2. April 1902)


RAMER, Lewis and wife died of pneumonia at their home in Jeffer- son. Township, Whitley County, Indiana. She died at two o'clock in the morning on Tuesday .. He died on Monday at midnight. ( Issue .of 2. April 1902)


RICHARD, Lewis was born, on: 24 March 1846, at St Sousane in Eastern France to George and Katharine Richard who came to- the-U.S. when Lewis was one year old. For 6 years they lived near Buffalo, N.Y. then in 1853 came to Whitley County, Indiana., In five years from the day this family sailed from France, the mother died. His father died in 1901 and had had 7 children born of two marriages. : On 23 April 1874 Lewis married Hulda Stallsmith and in. 1889 moved to Columbia City, Indiana. He met his death on 28 March 1902 by falling out of his train or leaning out of it and being struck by a passing train. The train on which he had taken a horse to Chicago was standing in the yards. He left a son, George Ed- win who was then 27 years of age. He had two full brothers and two half-brothers living. His three sisters died young.


SINE, Amos, a native of Whitley County, Indiana died Tuesday at 12.30 A.m. aged 61 years. nie enlisted for service in the Civil War in 88th Vol. Infantry. Returned in 1864. Married Elizabeth and shortly after moved to- Fort Wayne. He be- gan his railroad service with the Pennsylvania in 1879 and was .one of their oldest engineers. He was survived by his wife, one drughter, a sister (irs. Rosana Whitney of Douglas, Kan. ) , and a brother, Jacob Sine of Churubusco, Indiana. ( Issue dated 9 april 1902)


STAHL, Mrs. Charles was born 16 December 1853 in wertenberg, Germany; died Friday P.m. at her residence on East Ellsworth Street, Columbia City, Indiana. Her parents brought her to Rochester, Indiana and she married on 31 December 1875. ner- husband was a cooper and they came to Whitley County, Indiana in 1883. They had five children but Adolph Stahl is the only one now living. , Burial was in the Masonic Cemetery, Columbia City, Indiana. The Rev. Jungkuntz of the German Lutheran Ch. was in charge of the service.

KEPPLER, Mrs. Jacob ( nee Dorothy Shonell) was born in whitley County, Indiana on IC September 1866; died 20- March 1902 aged . 35-4-22; was married on 25 November 1888 and had 3 sons and 1 daughter. She was survived by .. one son, one daughter, her aged mother, brothers William and Henry and sisters, mrs. Anna Jordan and Caroline Robbins. She was a member of the United Brethren church.


VAIDLICH, Christian D. was born on 12 December 1824 in wurtem- berg, Germany to John and Mary waidlich. He was the third son in a family of 12 children. his father who was an educated employee of the German government, died in 1856; his mother died in 1858. Christian D. learned the cabinet makers trade in Germany. His eldest brother came to the u.S. in 1840. His letters gave such glowing accounts of the new land that Christ- ian came in 1843. He landed in New York City and went on to Franklin County, Pennsylvania where he worked as a carpenter until 1845 at .which time he arrived in Columbia City, Indiana. Here he worked first as a carpenter then engaged in the dry- goods business .. He died 12 April 1902 . His casket was made of pencil cedar lined with brass and was the same kind used for the burial of Pres . Mckinley . It came from Chicago and was the


most costly ever brought to this county. A, private mausoleum was built in the present Greenhill Cemetery where his body rests. . He was twice married, first in 1847 to Ann Moore to · whom two children were born. William H. (deceased-) and Mary E. who married George W. Eicholtz of Indianapolis, Indiana. His second marriage was to Mrs. Elizabeth ( Myers) Bixby in 1854. . He had two sisters in America, Mrs. Aggie Myers. and Mrs. Anna M .- Newman of-Lafayette, Indiana.


GALLAGHER, Mrs. Hugh ( Anna) -was born about 1825 in County Fermanaugh, Ireland where she married. "They came to the U.S. during the administration of Pres .. Franklin Pierce. They lo- cated in Columbia City, Indiana in 1866. Her husband died on 5 May 1895. They were married in 1847 .. She died at 3.30 A .... Saturday at the home of her daughter, mrs. hary Gallivan on- South Main Street, Columbia City. Survived by these children: Frank Gallagher of Valparaiso, Ind .; Thomas of Covington, Ind .;


Mrs. kary Gallivan , Patrick and Edward (present Sheriff of Whitley County, Indiana) all of Columbia City. ( Wednesday issue, 23 April 1902)


LILLICH, Mrs. George ( nee Mary Barbara Klatzbicher) died Sun- day at 12.15 A.M. at the Fort Wayne home of her son, Mel Lillich. She was born in Blaughbach, Germany on 8 October 1830 ; on 24 July 185? married George Lillich and they came to the U.S. in 1854. They first lived 10 years in Chio then moved to Columbia City, Indiana. She was the mother of 6 children, two survived her, Mel Lillich of Fort Wayne and Charles E. of Columbia City at whose home her funeral service was held. The Rev. Haithcock officiated. ( Wednesday issue dated 23 April 1902)


EBERHARD, Mrs. Frank (nee Ella A. Yagle, only daughter- of Adam Yagle) died Tuesday aged 35 years. She left 2 children, one being an infant only nine days old. Burial was in the Eberhart Ceme - tery, southwest of Columbia City, Indiana. .

DAUGHERTY, Mrs. Jane (Elliott) who came to Columbia City, Indiana with her sister, Margaret Elliott on Tuesday, died suddenly Thurs - day morning. They were visiting their sister, mrs. I. B. Rush. She was born in Columbiana County, Ohio, a daughter of George Elliott, a native' of Scotland. She was aged 65 years. Mrs. John Q. Adams was a sister also .. The remains were shipped to Pitts- burgh, Pa. ( Wednesday issue dated 30 April 1902)


FEASTER, Jacob died north of Columbia City, Indiana at 3.00 o'clock P.M., Tuesday. He came to the U.S. in 1853 and lived . first near Springfield, Ohio. He came to Whitley County, Ind. in 1858 and in 1864 married Mary Waterfall who with 3 children survived him. The children : Mrs. Anthony ulerich, Mrs. Charles Lamb, William Feaster. He was born near Berne, Switzerland on 29 January 1835. He was aged 67 years and 3months. He was buried in the Greenhill Cemetery, Columbia City, Ind. ( Wednesday issue dated 7 may 1902)


ZELLERS, John died at his home three miles northeast of Columbia City, Indiana on Monday evening, 5 May 1902. He was aged 81-7-8. He was born in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania On 27 Sept. 1820 and in 1848 married Catherine Spotts. .. They came to Whitley County, Indiana in 1853 and located on the farm where he died. They had 9 children. He was . survived by his wife and these children: Mrs. Lucinda Hively and Mrs. Clara Wiley of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Susan Rouch, Elizabeth Miller, Rebecca Tatner and Mary Shriner of Whitley County, Indian and Edward W. Zellers of Ind- ian Territory. He was a member of the U. B.Church. The Rev. Love conducted the fumeral service and burial was in the Stough Cem.

He was born on the reservation on 2 October 1850, the youngest of 12 children born to James R.Godfrey. His grandfather was. Francis Godfrey , or Godfroi.' He was a 32 degree mason. FOSTER, Samuel of Thorncreek Township, Whitley County, Ind., died on Friday. . He was aged about 60 years. He was survived by his wife and 3 sons. ( Wed. issue dated. 7 may 1902). -


HULLINGER, George william was born 3 Jenuary 1832 in Terre Haute, Indiana. Came to whitley County, Indiana in the 1840' s. he married Kate Middlekauff who survived him with five of their six children. He was a soldier of the Civil War and- served 2 - years and 9 months. He was a Whitley County Commissioner for the years 1868 and 1869. He operated a saddler and harness making business and was a member of Grace Lutheran Church . -
