This township was established March 9, 199. It embraces trent -tro pod one-half acres.
There are fire cemeteries : - Bandhill, on State Road 4;, three miles east of Columns, in the : ' 1/4 of Section 18; in Win Family Centers on state Road Al on Hrs. Bill's fan, in Section 14; taron, in de Wit of section 2, in the resten part of the township; non foravian Countery in the 3" 1/4 of section 2; and a small centery just smith of the Harve Coffman farm, in section 13. I have heard this referred to as the Campbellite Cemetery; so it was possibly sued by the followers of Alexander Campbell who restored the Disciples of Christ, now called tho Christian Cryych.
Mrs. mangeret Talley, who inherited her mother's, rs. . Bill's land, said that no stones were left in this Gardis Family burial mint.
.
COLUMBUS TOWNSHIP
Columbus Township was organized and established by the order of the Board of County Commissioners May 11, 1824. Several changes were made in the boundary lines, the ! last on June 13,1859.
The sixteen cemeteries listed are as follows; Garland Brook, just east of Columbus; City Cemetery in Col- umbus, just north of 16th Street; Thompson Cemetery, one mile southwest of Columbus on the Brownstown or Mineral Spos Springs Road, in the northwest corner of N 7 1/4 of Section 32; St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran (or Clifty) on State Ro Road 7, in the S E 1/4 of Section 33; a small Baptist ceme- tery east of Road 7, on the Bick farm; a family plot east of Road 7 on the Orval Thompson farm in Section 29; Carter's Ch Chapel, northwest of Columbus; the Christian Union, west of Columbus in Section 28; the Crump Family Cemetery on J.S. Crunp's land, in Section 7; two family plots, the Olmstead, on the C.F.Berry farm, west of the County Farm, on the north side of the Heagy road; and the Lewellen Family, south of ok this road on Jesse Heagy's farm; one on Fisher's farm at Gar- den City; one on the Marr Farm on Road 31 7: the Irwin-Glant- on Family Cemetery also on Road 3]. W in Garden City; and Mt . Pleasant, west of Columbus.
Ross Crump listed the Crump Family plot; Rev. Nau, the St. Paul's Lutheran, Mrs. Annie Newson HoEven the Thompson Cemetery; and Mrs. Laura Fix started the City Cemetery . The two last named are now deceased. Mrs. Fix worked with the D.A.R .; and Mrs. Newsom was President of the Historical Sous cioty .
GARLAND BROOK
In 1939 Thomas Brockman, Soxton at Garland Brooi, talked before the Rotary Club. From the article in the news paper, the following facts were taken.
The first burial was June 25, 1886. At this tim
212
there were 6,843 graves. In 1938 there were 233 burials. In the peak year, 1936, there were 235.
The only income of the cemetery is derived from opening and closing graves, fees for flower watering service, and from sale of lots. The revenue from all sources except sale of lots almost pays the labor bill at the cemoe tery, which last year amounted to $3, 900. Modern equipment must be purchased from time to time.
Every lot is numbered, and the exact location of every burial is on file in the sexton's office.
Will Marsh, of Oklahoma City, formerly a newspaper man in Columbus, tole me that when Garland Brook was opened in 1886, the bodies buried in the old Catholic Cemetery at Tenth and Wilson Streets in Columbus, were moved to Garland Brook. They are clustered about the Chapel that s stands farther east in the Cemetery. His grandparents, the Goodins, are in this olot.
