Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3

The University has been very fortunate in securing MRS. GEO. F. FELTS as principal of the Normal department. She will · make her department thoroughly systematic and valuable to those who are prepar- ing to teach.

The REV. W. F. ZANDER will give to the University enough of his time to enable him to teach two classes daily. He is an agreeable gentle- man and an able teacher.

MISS MARTHA E. TIBBALS will continue to be principal of the Art department. The increasing popularity of her work, together with the fact that she has engaged Pro‘. Carl Krauskopf to assist her, will cer- tainly secure a large patronage to the Art Department of Taylor Uni- versity.

Mrs. J. W. Goodrich remains with us to teach Stenography.

As will be seen on the page where the members of the faculty are named, the music department has not been provided for at the date of putting the catalogue to press (August 10, 1891.) The trustees expect to secure competent and satisfactory instructors in both the instrumental and vocal departments.

REGULATIONS.

ENTRANCE EXAMINATION.

Students bearing the personal certificate of a former teacher concern- ing studies satisfactorily completed will be given credit for the work they have done; otherwise they must pass an examination (usually oral) upon entering Taylor University. The purpose of this examination is to properly classify the students, and to insure that none take classes too far advanced for them, and that all have a sufficient amount of work.

DELINQUENT STUDENTS.

When lessons have been missed for any cause the student must make them up in full.

TERM EXAMINATIONS.

Examinations will be held at the close of each term and reports of each term's work will be given to the students.

Every student must register at the beginning of each term, before entering any of the classes.

The tuition and other fees should be paid to the registrar at the beginning of the term.

GENERAL INFORMATION

CONCERNING TAYLOR UNIVERSITY.

The institution was established in 1846, by the ministers of the North Indiana Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. It was chartered in 1847 as the Fort Wayne Female College. This school was consolidated with the Fort Wayne Collegiate Institution for Young Men in 1853, the new institution assuming the legal name of The Fort Wayne College.

20

The old building was erected in 1846-'47, the corner-stone being laid June 23, 1847. It is located on a plat of ground containing three acres, at the west end of Wayne street, Fort Wayne, Allen county, Indiana. The location is one of the most desirable in the city.

Fort Wayne is a city of 40,000 inhabitants, a railroad center acces- sible from ten different directions, and is a well ordered and healthful city.

In 1884 an addition 60 x 73 feet and four stories high was erected. This stands immediately in front of the main edifice of the old building, and presents a handsome appearance. This addition contains chapel, recitation rooms, library, dining-room and laboratory. The recita- tion rooms of the building have been partitioned into music rooms and offices, and are well fitted for those purposes.

TAYLOR UNIVERSITY.

A financial crisis having fallen upon the Fort Wayne College, its trustees were authorized to sell the property of the institution, and they did so to the Taylor University.

Taylor University is named in honor of Bishop William Taylor, for- merly a local preacher of world-wide fame and most remarkable achieve- ments, but now Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church for Africa.

The trustees of the University represent three different constitu- encies, viz., The National Association of Local Preachers, the Fort Wayne District of the North Indiana Conference, and the Fort Wayne College of Medicine.

LITERARY SOCIETIES.

The Thalonian Literary Society, the oldest society of the institution, was organized in 1853. Among the former members are found some of the most prominent citizens of the city or State.

The Philalethean Society was organized in 1878. It has a large membership and is rapidly increasing in influence.

Each of the societies has an elegantly furnished hall. Both societies are open to ladies and gentlemen, and all students are recommended to identify themselves with one or the other, as thereby they will receive an essential training that only the literary society can give.

THE PEARSON ORATORICAL PRIZE.

Rev. W. F. Pearson, D. D., of Philadelphia, has provided a prize of $25 in gold for that gentleman student of Taylor University who shall excel in an oratorical contest, to be held in the University auditorium, on Monday evening of commencement week. Not less than four students of Taylor University, selected by the faculty from members of the literary societies, shall contest for this prize. The judges of the contest will be selected by the President of the University, and the decision will embrace both the matter of the oration and the manner of its delivery.

21

THE MOONEY ESSAY PRIZE.

The Rev. Geo. W. Mooney, of New York City, has provided a prize of $25 in gold for that lady student of Taylor University who shall excel in an essay contest. The conditions of the contest and the night on which it shall be held to be the same as those of the oratorical contest.

THE CHRISTIAN HERALD PRIZE.

Louis Klopsch, A. M., Ph. D , publisher of the Christian Herald, New York City, offers the Christian Herald prize of $50 to the victors in a debate between six contestants, three affirmative and three negative, the $50 to be divided equally among the victors. The judges are to be selected by the President of the University. This contest is open to both ladies and gentlemen.

THE APPEAL OF TAYLOR UNIVERSITY TO OLD STUDENTS.

Let every former student of the Fort Wayne College who expects to attend some school during the year 1891-92 come to Taylor University, and bring as many others as possible with him.

Let all the old students of Fort Wayne College who are now in busi- ness make a special effort to turn a great tide of students to Taylor University.
