History of Grant County

1. FROM SAVAGERY TO CIVILIZATION.

In the light of past history, December 19, 1912, was the first day of a new century in the annals of Grant county-a Fresh, clean page in the " Book of Time. " While speed regulations may not please every- body, all admit that time tlies-that Old Father Time is many centuries ahead of himself, and the mission of this Centennial History of Graut -- the banner Indiana county, is simply to tabulate and record the events of his flight. The historian of today finds so little data of the past, he is reminded of the ancient story that when the nations of the earth were given their religions, each one inseribed his saered creed upon either metal, parchment or stone, but methinks the local pioneer must have been akin to the Gypsy who is reputed to have only written on cabbage leaves when the donkeys were browsing in that direction, so meager is the record left behind him.

Although one vast wilderness -- no county boundaries having been established one hundred years ago, civilization in this "neck o' the woods" really dates back to the winter of 1812, when Lientenant Colonel John B. Campbell, in command of a volunteer army and following the course of the Mississinewa, finally made a stand against the Indians on territory now within the bounds of Grant county the night of December 17. continuing the conffiet into the next day, and the result has reverber- ated along the corridors of time, recent Mississinewa Battle Grounds orators, seeking to stir up local enthusiasm, saying it had most important significance. In the lapse of a century it has been revealed that this battle against the Indians, which was in reality an important engage- ment in the Second War with England, actually opened up the entire Northwest territory for future settlement and present day citizenship.

The record of the Historical Society. December 18, 1912, reads : " By postponing its regular September meeting till December the Grant County Historical Society was enabled to appropriately mark the end of the first century in local history-was, speaking figuratively, erecting the first century milestone. At this meeting. Mrs. Mary Mckinney-Hol- lowell sang The Star Spangled Banner,' the song a recital of past history, and prayer was offered by the Rev. J. F. Porter as a prelude to this centennial anniversary meeting marking one hundred years of progress since the battle of the Mississinewa. * 'Pleasant-the Historie Township,' was the paper presented by J. O. Spurgeon which closed the series of township papers written for the Centennial history. Deelaring that he was not in the Battle of the Mississinewa, although he came to Grant county December 5, 1845, Judge R. T. St. John re- viewed much past history, establishing the elaim of unjust treatment of the Red Man of the Forest, relating many incidents heard from Indians and settlers, and it was a fine retrospect-a fitting final of a century. * The eentury milestone meeting was replete with interest."

HISTORY OF GRANT COUNTY

Other county historians might introduce the subject by relating the incidents connected with the first settlement of Indiana at Vincennes, and it is of interest to know that at the beginning of the nineteenth century there were about fifty houses there, and that settlements had been established at other points in Indiana. Territorial government was established July 29, 1805, but the limitations of the present historian will not allow of any wanderings in the bypaths of history covering the time from 1788, when the Northwest territory was defined. until 1812, when the Battle of the Mississinewa occurred, and four years later when Indiana was admitted into the Union as a state, At the beginning of this second century in local history there is no native resident of the county as old as Indiana, although James D. Fort of Jonesboro, who is a native Kentnekian, dates back one year earlier than statehood in Indiana, Mrs. Mary Lynas of Point Isabel, born February 20, 1816, and who recently died, having been the last in a galaxy of names of nonogen- arians who came into the world the year Indiana came into the Union.

Strangers visiting Indiana for the first time naturally inquire about the natives, and are told that the Indians are all civilized, but the Grant county citizen of today would like to know more of Sammel and Moses Grant, from whom the county is said to be named, than is contained in the simple statement that they were killed in battle with the Indians at Grant creek in Switzerland county. The archives of the county show that the valiant Revolutionary soldier, General Francis Marion, is hon- ored in the name of the county seat, and history gives considerable in- formation about how he inspired his regiment to even greater exertion -- a commendable trait in his character. Many persons beginning this second century in local history remember Obadiah Jones, who founded Jonesboro, but only children's children remain to tell the story.
