INTRODUCTORY.
In presenting the public with the thirty-third annual directory of the city of In- dianapolis the publishers take occasion to call attention to the steady progress of the city during the period of their connection with it. There is no better index or criterion of a city's growth than a series of carefully compiled directories, showing not only the actual increase of population from year to year, but the growth of business as well, by the multiplication of business houses and firms, and the introduction of new branches of trade. A comparison of the city directory of 1888 with that of 1856 would show how remarkable this growth has been, and would, doubtless, surprise even those most familiar with the general progress of the city. During that period Indianapolis has grown from a quiet town of about 18,000 population to a metropolitan city of over 100,000. This steady growth indicates good staying qualities, and the possession of the elements of continned prosperity. In 1856 a man would have been considered visionary if he had predicted for Indianapolis a population of 100,000 in thirty years. It would be much safer now to predict 200,000 in the next ten years. The city's past growth goes far to insure its future. Its prospects were never as good as they are to-day, nor its advantages as widely recognized. No other city can point to a more healthy growth, in no other is business on a more solid basis, and none has better prospects for the future. Its location is ad- mirably designed for a great inland city. It is not only central in Indiana, a State of vast resources, but it is central in the Union, almost in the heart of the continent, mid- way between the teeming millions of the east and the rapidly growing population of the great west. From this central location its railway communications extend in all direc- tions, and to all parts of the country, giving it remarkable advantages as a distributing point. These conditions would inevitably insure the future growth of the city ; but with the added advantage of natural gas as a cheap fuel, there can be no doubt that Indian- apolis is destined to become a great manufacturing point, and to hold a prominent place among the leading cities of the country. There is no kind of manufacturing that can not be carried on here to advantage, and present indications point to a great develop- ment of this interest in the near future. The outlook for other branches of business is equally as good. The city's wholesale trade is in the most satisfactory condition it has ever been, and is steadily increasing in extent, volume and value. Twenty-five years ago all this territory was controlled by Cincinnati and Chicago houses, and Indianapolis jobbers, who then operating in a very small way, were compelled to bny their supplies from the dealers in those cities. Now they buy their goods directly from the manufact- urers or importers, in some cases importing directly themselves, and are able to compete successfully with the wholesale dealers of any western city. The city's advantages as a live stock market are becoming generally recognized, and this branch of business seems to have a fine future before it. On the whole, the publishers take great pleasure in con- gratulating the citizens of Indianapolis on its solid and healthy growth in the past, and its bright prospects for the future.
