Benevolence and society were repre- [ feature of the luncheon was the reading sented today in the jubilee celebration of the Ladies' Hebrew Benevolent asso- ciation when forty seven ladics gathered in honor of the event at the. Anthony hotel. This important society of this city, has ever heen " devoted to quiet works of charity, though there has been at times a social element introduced in honor of various anniversaries. : Today an elaborate and heautifully appointed luncheon at the Anthony hotel at ]

of letters and telegrams from people not living here, who are children of charter members. Many of these letters con- tained gifts ; for the association. : The floral decorations" of the luncheon, "in charge of the Flick Floral 'company, were in gold and white. On the large table in its center stood, an ' effective combination of crystal vases filled with small yellow chrysanthemums; known as' the sweetness variety. , On the small o'clock was to do honor, not only to the ! tables stood low gold baskets of yellow fiftieth anniversary of the organization, but to the three charter members who are still living. to recall the early days

White tulle bows tied the han- of the society when the country needed | dles. - Another decorative feature in-, just such help as that band of unselfish and noble, women gave. . Nothing has been more significant of the united pur- pose of the association than its keeping in office its various' presidents, many of whom have served many years. . Mrs. Joseph Lohman, the present highest of- ficer of the association, has served in the same capacity for' nearly ten years, though not entirely in successive terms. Other former presidents are Mrs. Alex Lauferty, now living in Boston, MaBs .; Mrs. Max/ B. Fisher, Mrs. Aaron Roths- child, Mrs. Samuel Chaska and Mrs. Ben Lehman. The three charter members now living and who were able to he present at the luncheon are Mrs. M. Lamley, who served many years as sec- retary of the society; Mrs. S. Freihurger and Mrs. E. "Rosenthal." The presidents and charter members were seated at the honor table and others at small tables. The present officers of the association are president, Mrs. Joseph Lohman; vice president, Mrs. . Isidor " Lehman'; 'secre- tary, Mrs. Louis Heilbroner, and treas- urer, Mrs. Ralph Clark." There were also present several out of town visitors, Mrs. Simon Straus, Mrs. Isaac Straus, Mrs. Seelig' and 'Mrs. Schloss, all of Ligonier, and . Mrs. Louis ` Meyer, of South Whitley. All of these ladies were formerly members of the society. / A

The three charter members wore cor- sage houquets of violets tied with rib- hons, the gifts of the society, and most fragrant rememhrances of the day. Aft- er the luncheon the Bailhe trio gave a program of chamber music, thus bring- ing to a delightful close one of the most beautiful. anniversary gatherings ever held in the city. The committee on ar- rangements for the affair was composed of Mrs. Theodore Frank," general chair. man; Mrs. Louis Heilbroner, Mrs .. A. Rothschild, Mrs. Julius Nathan, Mrs. Joseph Lohman, Mrs. Ben Lehman and Mrs. Isidor Lehman. An interesting historical sketch of, the society was read by Mrs. M. Lamley, as follows:

"Mrs. President and Ladies: I have been requested hy our worthy president and committee to give you a hrief ab; stract of the history of our Ladies' He- brew Benevolent society members who are meeting here today to do honor to its fiftieth anniversary, and to the char- ter memhers in particular, of which I am one of the three remaining. I have. ac- cepted reluctantly, as it is a great effort

on my part to do justice to the subject assigned to me in the present condition fate has seen fit to place me. But as one of the committee so sweetly, re- marked to me, 'Mrs. Lamley, the society is your child,' this reminded me that a mother's duty never ceases. Though our hearts are sore, the mind. weakened, nerves unstrung and we are estranged from, our, familiar surroundings, our feel-, ings remain unchanged towards the ob ject we once loved. To some of you ladies. I may appear almost a stranger ; I myself feel a stranger in my own land. Ladies, I heg your indulgence for my ef- 'fort, simple and pure.

"Statistics are generally a bore, hut I will try to he brief. If anything of im- portance has heen omitted, I trust for your consideration.

"Organized Relief Society.

):"We followed the ranks of all America. A meeting-was called to organize a sol- diers' relief society.">"Every . married woman in our community responded. All worked diligently for the worthy cause." Boxes of linen, clothing, provis- ions, etc., were sent out to the boys in blue who had left home and family to hattle for and save the flag of our glor- ious republic. When peace reigned once more hetween the north and the south, when the weapon was exchanged for the plow, our work was also finished. We then felt. that a clasp was wonted to fasten the chain of social and charitable ties and this organization was founded. Twenty three ladies signed the constitu- tion. They were Mrs. F. Nirdlinger, Mrs. Sam . Nirdlinger, Mrs. S. Freiburger, Mrs.I./ Lauferty, who. were of

evolence and charity in its true sense. We followed the dictates of Job"" to be an eye to the blind, an ear to" the deaf, .provide for the needy, welcome i the stranger to beat home with us. The call of distress was answered to the" ex- tent of our funds. We did not know the trained nurse of today. 'We individually devoted ourselves day and night to the sick and afflicted. We were all young Awives, and youth knows no hardships. They were willing hands and ? tender hearts, those of your mothers.'

Progress is Noted.

"The obligations were five cents week- ly; later $3 a year. An increase of mem- bership to thirty three, is found in the twenty fifth report, the silver> anniver- sary of the organization, which was cele- brated most elegantly with a banquet in Arion hall. Every member and her entire family participated. Then fifteen of the charter members were present, five

exercises opened with prayer by Dr, Aaron. Toasts were responded to by Dr. Rosenthal; S. Lauferty, M. Frank and M. Lamley, who was .master of ceremonies. Mrs. Schlesinger, who was president at the time, made a few remarks 'of 'wel- come, and Mrs. M. Frank, treasurer, also made a short address of welcome. Mrs. M. Lamley, secretary, read an abstract of the history of the organization .; The total receipts for the 'time, '1867 to 1886, were $3,481.19. " This sum was' expended thus:Nine hundred dollars to the : or- phans' asylum in Cleveland, O .; many dollars to improvements on the syna- gogue, and the balance in donations" to verious, benevolent purposes." " From whichever direction, misfortune called it was met with willing response. A room for a number of years; but I will not tax your patience with" details. The records honor them.

A Complimentary Social.

"On March - 27, 1901, a complimentary social was given in honor of the remain- ing charter members. Eight -answered the call. , They were Mrs. A. Oppen- heimer, Mrs. L. Falk, Mrs. S. Redelshei- mer, Mrs. A. Heilbroner, Mrs. V. Jacob- son, Mrs. S." Freiburger, Mrs. E. Rosen- thal and Mrs. "M. Lamley. Thirty -six; members and several invited guests par- ticipated. Our worthy president, Mrs. Joseph Lohman, welcomed the honor guests most beautifully.& Mrs. Oppen- heimer responded in behalf of the charter members. Mrs .. Lamley read a paper on the past, present and future of this or-

being absent and three deceased. The | ganization. The closing remarks of this paper were these: May this association continue as a lasting monument to com- ing, generations.' Truly we find our hopes verified. Ten years have passed and this society devoted to philanthropy, charity and" sociability still exists, im- proved and on a solid, basis. We are af- filiated with every charitable institution in the city, irrespective of creed; also with', the Hebrew" Orphans' "home in Cleveland. and " the ; Denver 'hospital. Every good , cause is honored and the poor, assisted; nurses 'and; linens fur- nished the suffering. . Truly - we are progressing with the tide of time. I sin- cerely trust that future' years may still find you active in the cause. When the last of us who built the structure has passed into the great beyond, let one
