INTRODUCTORY.
In reviewing the directory year just closing we beg the indulgence of the general public while We take more than a cursory glance at the events which mark the most prosperous year in our city's history. It is with a feeling of pride, shared alike by every citizen, that, standing where the lights of another year are blending with the clos- ing scenes of the old, profiting by the ablest teachers, earnest toil and loug experience, we see before us an era of prosperity, the extent of which can hardly be computed by the records of the closing year. There is nothing that can more adequately set forth a city's clann to greatness than a directory. Open the pages of the volume for 1893, contrast it with the issue of 1855 and the mind staggers at the stupendous difference. Then, what appeared an herculean undertaking, the gathering of 2,250 names and arrang ng them in partial compilation, was first accomplished for Indianapolis.
Standing beneath the shadow of the most mag- niticent state edifice in the country, within sight of a $2,000,000 court house, or within the great union station where centers the high ways of steel diverging to every point; or along the miles of asphalt, lined on either side by marts of trade of stone, of marble, iron, brick and glass, with pa- latial residences and bright and happy homes illumed by electric light and warmed by nature's forces under man's control; where dwell more than a hundred and thirty-seven thousand peo- ple, skilled in the arts and sciences, supporting a free school system unequaled by any other; where intelligence, economy and thrift alike pre- dominate; where the social scale is of the highest standard; where civic and moral law is well estab- lished, who can say that the most sanguine pio- neer of seventy three years ago ever saw in his daring imagery the consummation of these years. On the second day of March, 1819, when John Pogue breasted the foaming wave of the historic stream that bears his name, little may we con- jecture that hisnight's repose, the respite of each day's care and labor, was much disturbed by visions of the accomplishments which now sur- round us.
"There is no better index to a city's growth than the figures furnished by carefully compiled directories, showing not only the actual increase of population from year to year, but the growth of business as well, by the increase of business honses and firms, and the introduction of new branches of trade.
A comparison of the Indianapolis directories since 1855, when the first edition of about two hundred pages was issued, up to, and includ- ing the present volume, containing 1.022 pages of solid, double column matter, forms an inter- esting study, and tends to surprise even those most familiar with the general prosperity of the city.
The figures which we give show by careful count the number of names appearing in the di- rectories for each succeeding year :

The past year marks an era of prosperity. Three thousand two hundred houses have been built costing $3,500.000. The real estate transac- tions have amounted to over $11.000 000. Two thousand five hundred and ninety building per- mits have been issued, and the many fine office buildings erected are monuments to the year's progress. The Commercial Club building, the Lombard building. the East man, Schleicher & Lee building. the Burford building, the Marion block, the Rhodins building. the Everitt building, the Public Library building. the Sentinel Printing Company's building, the Empire Theater, the Hau- eisen block, the Gem. the Surgical Institute build- ing. the largest of the kind in the world, several new public school buildings and the county jail are some of the more imposing structures, asalso may be mentioned the erection of several church edifices that are a credit alike to the denomina- tions worshiping in them and to the city long sustaining the reputation of being a city of churches. Numerous manufacturing plants em- ploying thousands of skilled mechanics have been established, and the electric light plant's

This tabulation gives an increase of about $2,000,000 over the business of 1891. The records show that many investments have been made by men of large means; but the large majority of the purchases were made by the home seekers and wage-earners of the city.

COMPTROLLER'S TOTALS.
RECEIPTS AND SOURCES OF REVENUE IN THE YEAR -EXPENDITURES.
The city comptroller shows in his report that the expenses of the city have almost balanced receipts. Approximately the receipts for the vear were $785,000. and the disbursements about the same, leaving a balance in the treasury of about $20 000. The amount of warrants drawn was abont $$20.000. Not included in these totals is the temporary loan of $135 000, which was made and paid off this year. The city now has no temporary loan. The principal items of re- ceipts for the year were :

INTRODUCTORY.
STOCK YARDS.
The Stock Yards are the most convenient and best managed in the country. The pens are un- der seven large sheds. They are dry, well sup- plied with fresh water, racks, and troughs for feed. The sheds cover twenty-five acres of ground, with pen room for 30,000 hogs, 4,000 cattle, 5,000 sheep, and 1,000 horses. The feed barn has 240 stalls. The hay barn has a capacity for 600 tons. The capacity of the corn cribs is 60,000 bushels. The oat bins hold many car loads.
Two large tanks, built on a substructure fifty feet high, furnish the water supply of the yards and hotel. The tanks have a capacity of 100,000 gallons of water which is taken from a driven well .120 feet deep. At the stock yards is a chem- ical engine and plenty of hose for protection.

NATURAL GAS
is the fuel, and Electricity is the light. The un- usually severe winter has severely tested the former.
NEW INDUSTRIES.
Over $3,000,00 sought and found investment in the various new industries for the year 1892; and this fact, together with what even the most cas- ual observer must note, the patent one, to wit: the enlargement of almost every established busi- ness, must prove a source of gratification to ev- ery citizen.
THE NEW ADDITIONS
Open up a large territory adjacent to, and sur- rounding the city, and show rapid strides in buildings and improvements, and under the new system of rapid transit over electric street rail- roads, have become the favorite abiding place, not alone for the family whose means are lim- ited, but for every Walk of life.
THE SUBURBS,
Which, under the regime of a few years ago seemed interminably beyond the reach of those whose business called them down town, are now within easy access and only bide the time when they shall become-as they are now for all prac- tical purposes-a part of the municipality.
To avoid the confusion which might arise iu similarity of names in city and suburbs we use the following abbreviations as thus: Brighi wood, (B); Brooklyn Heights, (B H); Clifton on the River, (C R); Haughville, (H); Irvington, (1); Mount Jackson, (M J); North In ix napolis, (N I); South Indianapolis, ($ I); Stratford, (S); West In- dianapolis, (W I); Woodruff Place, (W P); Wood- side (W).
POPULATION.
The directory for 1892 contained 52.008 names, The present issue contains 55,025 names, an in- crease of 3 017. The multiple 212. the lowest used in any city, shows a population of 137,562, an in- crease of 7.542.
The importance of a city directory can not be overestimated. Dispen-e with its publication one year and contemplate the inconvenience that would arise. The third year the confusion in . ames would be chaotic, and a general demand would be made for a return to the system. The publishers feel confident that nothing has been omitted in the compi ation of this issue to make it perfect in systematic arrangement, and abso- lutely correct in point of information and to the patrons of the work would express sincerest thanks for their support and encouragement. It i- a source of gratification that so long a period should establish the most pleasant relations he- tween patron and publisher, and bounden duty is best conserved by the faithful performance of trust imposed.
