R. L. POLK & CO.'S Indianapolis City Directory 1914
STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE AND DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS [ COPYRIGHT 1914]
HE Street Directory is an alphabetical arrangement of the names of the Streets and Avenues of . I the city. By the decimal system of numbering houses adopted in this city, one hundred num- bers are allotted to each square. On streets running north and south the numbering begins at Washington street. The streets running east and west are numbered East and West from Meridian street. All other streets not commencing at either of the above points are numbered in accord- ance with this system. 'Even numbers occur on the north and west sides of streets and odd num- bers on the south and east sides. The names of intersecting streets and avenues, printed in italics, are given in the order in which they occur, which enables one to tell between what streets a cer- tain number is. For instance, you have 315 Bicking street: by reference to the Street Directory, you find Alabama intersecting at 300 and High at 350; consequently, the place you wish to find is between Alabama and High streets.
The index letter shown in parenthesis after street descriptions or intersecting streets indicate the nearest car line to that point. To find what car runs nearest to a given number, refer to the street and number, and the letter given after the nearest intersecting street indicates the car line in the list of routes on opposite pages.
In this department of the City Directory the number of each building on the street is given in numerical order and opposite the number is placed the name of the householder. In the busi- ness blocks containing offices, the occupant of each room is shown by number where practicable.
