An old gentleman who stayed at my house one night 35 years of##28 ago told me he was one of the first early settlers east of the Wabash River near Nt. Carmel. The first lb. of coffee he bought for his family in Indiana he gave 75 cents a lb. and the first calico dress for his wife cost $1.25 a yrd.
The females as well as the males dressed in skins from deer and other wild aniamals. Dressed deer skins were made into "frocks" as they were termed and worn ny the young ladies as well as their mothers. Moses Stallings who is now in his 84 th year and is living with his son william Says he distinctly recalls the time in 1810 and 1811 when girls wore leather frocks. He says that Miss "acaioo his brother John's first wife wore deer skin clothing and indeed it was all they could until they raised the mat- erial and manfactured it. When this marriage took place they had to make the trip for the licence through a heavy dense timbered forest to Vincences without any road save and Indiana trail. This was one of the first weddings to take place within the present limits of fosey county and was celebrated in the old fashion style with a delicious dinner of roast venson and turkey and a little pound cake made with Indiana meal made for corn pounded in a wooden mortor and a fandango at night. The weeding took place at William Macadoo's who was the first settler on a small creek a little west of Springfield which was named "acadoo's creek.
