In the year 1868 the school trustees of the town of Brazil decided to erect a new building for the accommodation of the pupils of the rapidly growing town. Plans and specifications were drawn up for the Meridian street building, which was finished in the year 1870, at a cost of something over twenty thousand dollars.

The gentlemen constituting the Board of Trustees at that time were Dr. W. H. Gifford. J. W. Kellar and H. Wheeler. Meridian street building is a monument to the sagacity of these gentlemen. The venerable Dr. Gifford and J. W. Kellar died, honored and respected citizens of our city. H. Wheeler is now a retired business man, living in Terre Haute. Mr. Wheeler enjoys the distinction of being a a public-spirited, intelligent gentleman.

The school trustees employed the following teachers for the school year beginning in October, 1870: A. Odell, principal, and C. P. Eppert, Mrs. A. D. Hawkins, Mattie Mercer, Rachel Wheeler and E. J. Thompson as assistant teachers.

Prof. Odell's management of the schools seemed to be unsatisfactory to the Board of Trustees, and he resigned in the following February. Prof. Odell was succceded by Prof. E. R. Smith, who served the remainder of the year and the succeeding year very acceptably. Mr. Smith retired from the teacher's profession, and has been for years a prominent physician in the

city of Chicago. Prof. Smith was strong, mentally and physically. His giant frame and military bearing had a depressing effect on the average Brazil boy at that time. On one occasion Mr. Smith was assaulted by a pugilistic patron whose son had been punished in school. The Professor administered a good flogging to the aforesaid pugilist. much to the grati- fication of a crowd of bystanders. A small fine was imposed upon Mr. Smith, which was promptly paid by the Board. It is needless to say that the Superintendent commanded the respect of all the better class of people.

Mr. C. P. Eppert was promoted to the superintendency after the retirement oi Prof. Smith, and served continuously till the year 1877, except the school year 1874 and 1875. Prof. M. S. Wilkinson was selected for that year. Prof. Eppert labored under the disadvantage of disease, contracted in Anderson- ville prison. He secured a position in the pension department, which he filled very honorably till the time of his death, a few years ago. He was prominent in the G. A. R., I. O. O. F., and F. and .A. M.

September 17, 1877, Superintendent John C. Gregg, the present incumbent, took charge of the schools. It was then that the preparation for the estab- lishment of a high school was begun. The difficulties were many, and the progress was slow, so it was not until ISS5 that the first class was graduated, consisting of one pupil, Mrs. Will M. Zeller, then Miss Mary Herz. Mean-

while, Mr. A. D. Hurst had succeeded Superintendent Gregg in 1882, and he in turn was displaced the next year by Superintendent Gregg, who was followed by Mr. J. M. Brown in 1884, and the next year, 1885, Superintendent Gregg was again restored to the place, which he still occupies. Ever since IS;o the rapid growth of the city, and the increase in the number of pupils, have kept the School Board at their wits' end to provide sufficient room and teachers. The following buildings were erected: Lambert street Building, four rooms, in 1875; Central Building, two rooms, was purchased in 1883; Jackson Street Building, four rooms, in 1888; Pinckley Street Building: four rooms, in 1881, and two rooms each were added to the Jackson Street and Lambert Street Buildings in 1893, making at present five buildings and twenty-four rooms and teachers. The enrollment increased in the same time from 650 in 1877 to 1,560 in 1896. The following prominent citizens have been members of the School Board since 1877: W. R. Torbert, Eli Hendrix, Major W. W. Carter, John Richardson, W. P. Richardson, Hon. E. S. Holliday, John Stewart, A. M. Daniels, A. F. Stonehart, Ex-Mayor Simon Herr, Wm. Leavitt, Wm. Spears, E. W. Smith, and the present Board-D. W. J. Superintendent John C. Gregg has held the position of Superintendent of the Brazil City Schools for 17 years. When he took charge in September, 1877, there was in all nine teachers employed, and, during the year 650 pupils enrolled. Now there are 26 teachers and almost 1,600 pupils in the schools. To his energy and careful work are largely due the establishment and success of the High School, which now number nearly 100 pupils, and has sent out over 150 graduates. Superintendent Gregg was born in Greene County, Ohio, March 7, 1844. His grandfather was a revolutionary soldier, serving under Washington from the battle of Long Island till the surrender at Yorktown, suffering the dreadful privations of the winters at Valley Forge and Morristown. He lived on his father's farm until September, 1862, when he entered the Sophomore class in Monmouth (Il1.) College. The next year he was a student in Miami University at Oxford, Ohio, where he re- mained till May, 1864, when he enlisted in Company I 167th O. N. G., and served in the army till September of the same year. He then resumed his studies at Monmouth College, where he graduated June 25, 1865. He began

teaching the sanve fall, and has taught continuously up to the present, wit! the exception of two years. On Christmas, 1867, he was married to Mis Susan A.
