William R. Lewis was born in Wales, June 13, 1866. He came to America in 1869, located in Pennsylvania, thence to Ohio, where he remained a short time, and in the spring of 1888 he located at Center Point, his present home. He was married to Miss Anna Swain, of Center Point, April 25, 1889 to whom were born three children, two boys, one deceased, and one girl. Mr. 'Lewis' father is dead, and his mother resides in Ohio. Mr. Lewis is a miner and mill boss. He is one of five brothers, all born June 13.
ARTICLE 158.
William H. MeCullough, son of Wesley and Matilda Mccullough, was born in Putnam county, July 28, 1843. His parents emigrated fron Penn- sylvania. He lived at home with the family until twenty-five years of age, when, in November, 1868, he married Miss Anna Heath, of Owen county. To this union three children were born, but one of whom, Anna M., survives, who married Everett Elkin, of Bowling Green. On the 27th of February, 1887. Mrs. McCullough died. On the 14th of October, 1890, he married Maria Dunnichey, of Brazil. In November, 1885, Mr. MoCullough moved onto and occupied the county poor farm, and has ever since been retained in charge of the same. Many improvements and reforms in the management of the premises and the pauper interests of the county have been introduced and successfully worked out under his administration.
ARTICLE 159.
J. F. Renner was born in Tuscarawas county, Ohio, 1849; came to Clay county, Ind., in 1871. Mr. Renner's first fifteen years in the state was devoted to the carpenter's trade, and to-day he is among the prosperous farmers of Sugar Ridge township. Ile married Miss Mary E. Ebersole, July, 1873. To
this union were bom three children, two living and one deceased. Mr. Renner with his happy family are residing near Center Point.
ARTICLE 160.
J. W. Henry was Born in Morrow county, Ohio, July 8. 1846. He came to Clay county in 1870, and was married to Miss Elizabeth Tribble, February 15. 1872. To this uniom one child was born, and died in infancy. He married for his second wife Mrs. Rebecca Barkley, May 14, 1885. Mr. Henry steamed the first boats that were worked at Saline City, in 1873. When Mr. Henry came to this county he was almost penniless, bu: to-day is worth many thousands, and is one of the most prosperous farmers of Sugar Ridge township.
ARTICLE 161.
P. L. Lancet, son of Valentine and Mary Lancet, was born at Greencastle, Indiana, April 28, 1843, where he lived during his boyhood days, and acquired a good common school education. In later years he engaged in the pursuits of the farm, until the spring of 1885, when he was employed by Huffman, the Reelsville meratant, to clerk in the store, where he won many friends. In 1889 he associated with his brother, G. F. Lancet, in the general mer- chandising businesss at Center Point, and on the 15th day of May of the same year married Miss Florence Ambrose, daughter of L. F. and Elizabeth Ambrose, of Center Point. To them there has been born one son, Kenneth E., August 2, 1891.

S. M. Shaffer, som of George W. and Caroline Schaffer, was born in Haw- kins county, Tenn.,. November 16, 1873. 1Ie came :o Clay county, Ind., in 1875, with his parents, and located at Center Point, his present home. Mr. Schaffer has been im the employ of the Lancet Bros. for several years. His good business quallácations have won for him a place that only a young man of ability can accomplish. He is a graduate of the Indianapolis com . mercial college.

engaged as clerk in his father's general store. He entered the Danville Normal school in 1893, and taught several terms in Washington and Sugar Ridge townships. Mr. Campbell resides at Center Point, where he has many friends.
ARTICLE 165.
Albert Fox was born August 7, 1861, at Reelsville, Putnam county. At the age of six years his parents located out in the country, where Albert had the facilities of a common school education. In 1882 he went to Kansas, return- ing in 1887, and on the 27th day of December of that year married Miss Laura J., eldest daughter of George Girton. To them there have been born three children-two sons and a daughter. In the year 1890 he engaged in saw- milling and lumbering and the threshing business, and the following year, in company with his brother, W. E. Fox, engaged extensively in the ma- chinery business, operating mills and threshing machines in Putnam and Clay counties. Mr. Fox and his brother manifested much enterprise in their line of business, always abreast of the times, and were the first to introduce new farm and other machinery into their section of the country in the way of threshers, hullers and stackers. They do a merchandising business at Reelsville, and are opening a general hardware and implement business. Mr. Fox is also postmaster at Reelsville.
ARTICLE 166.
O. T. Dunagan was born October 6, 1852, in Bridgeton, Parke county. His father, Solomon Dunagan, was a native of Morgan county, Ind., whose grandfather was a soldier of the revolutionary war from the Empire state.
The subject of this sketch came to Clay county in 1857, was educated in the public schools of Clay county; graduated from the Ladoga seminary in 1870; completed a commercial course in Terre Haute Commercial college in 1871; took a course of lectures in the law department of Michigan State university in 1874-75; graduated from the Latin course in the Indiana State Normal school in 1885. In 1888 the degree of A. M. was conferred by the Mt Lebanon university of Louisiana. He has taught in the district schools of Clay county seven years; has been principal of gmded schools in this county for eight years; was superintendent oi Shoals, Ind., public schools for two years; principal of Aurora, Ill., Normal school for two years; taught Greek and pedagogy in MIt. Lebanon university, La., and on account of fail-
ing health resigned and returned to Indiana. In 1890-91 he was superintendent of Pima Indian boarding school of Sacaton, Arizona. He has assisted county superintendents both in Clay and Martin counties in holding county normal schools for six sessions, and has taught for a period of 3.542 days.
ARTICLE 167.
The Center Point M. E. church was erected during the year 1873, under the pastorate of Rev. Boaz. The dedication service was delivered by Dr. Anderson, at that time president of Ashbury (now DePauw) university. It has a membership of about one hundred and forty. The present pastor is the Rev. G. F. McNaughton. Following is a list of che pastors that have presided during the past years: Rev. Boaz, Rev. W. W. Rundell, Rev. John Brunner, Rev. I. M. Baxter, Rev. I. N. Moore, Rev. Thomas Jones, Rev. S. T. Kennedy, Rev. C. F. Spray, A. A. Godby, Rev. G. E. Winn, Rev. C. W. Crook, Rev. C. F. Enyart and Rev. I. F. Edwards.
ARTICLE 168.
Ezra Brewer, son of A. J. and Manda Brewer, was born in Jackson town- ship. Clay county. Ind., February 13, 1874 At the age of thirteen years he went to Tennessee and remained one year; returned to Center Point and worked in the mines. Mr. Brewer was employed by the Lancet Bros. August 1, 1895, as clerk. Mr. Brewer is a self-made young man, and has won for himself a position trustworthy of his ability.
ARTICLE 170.
W. J. Parker, son of William and Elizabeth Parker, was born in Trumbull county, Ohio, February 13, 1866. He married Miss Elizabeth James (deceased) October 25, 1885. For his second wife he married Maggie Davis, September 25, 1891. Mr. Parker came to Center Point in ISSS. He was employed by Weaver & Todd for several years. During the spring of 1895 he engaged in business for himself at Center Point, where he has many friends.

Ellsworth Miller was born at Loogootce, Martin county, Ind., September 6, 1863. At the age of two years he moved with his parents to Omaha. Neb. At the age of six years he moved to Cataract, Owen county, Ind. At the

age of fourteen he was employed as clerk in the general store of J. K. Nichols, and became a drug clerk later for H. W. Horn, of Cloverdale. He located in Brazil in 1889, and engaged in general merchandise. He is now located in the same business at Center Point, and doing a thriving business. He married Miss Susie Hyland in 1896.
ARTICLE 172.
William O. Tilley, son of William N. and Mary E. Tilley, was born Feb- ruary 7, 1866, in Jackson township, Clay county, Ind. His early years were spent on the farm and saw mill. Mr. Tilley was elected township assessor of Sugar Ridge township in 1894. Mr. Tilley is a hustler and has won many friends throughout Sugar Ridge township by his courteous, pleasant dis- position, and all that have been fortunate enough to meet him consider it a compliment to be his friend.
ARTICLE 173.
Griffith Howells, son of John and Jane Howells, was born in Wethersfield, Ohio, January 17, 1866. He came to Clay county, Ind., in 1887, and was married to Miss Mary A., daughter of Thomas and Jane Reynolds, August 18, 1888, to whom the following children were born: Arthur and John, living, and two deceased. Mr. Griffith has followed stationary engineering for many years, until the spring of 1896, when he engaged with the Weaver Mining company as boss. Residence, Center Point.
ARTICLE 174
D. WV. Brattin was born in Ross county, Ohio, in 1847, and lived on a farm until 1861, when he went to Greencastle, Ind., to learn the trade of watch- maker. At the age of fourteen years he enlisted in the 55th Indiana in- fantry, and served as a private soldier until his term of service expired. He afterwards enlisted in the 105th and 133d Indiana regiments, and served until the regiments were mustered out of service. He came to Brazil, Ind., in 1871, and engaged in the jewelry business, and has since resided here. In 1895 he was elected Mayor and filled the office for the term for which he was elected. In 1893 he was appointed a member of the school board, which he has just resigned, in order to accept the office of Mayor of Brazil, to which
he had been elected. He is a member in good standing of the Masons, Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, A. O. U. W., Knights and Ladies of Honor and G. A. R.

Charles G. Stearley, son of John G. and Rosie M. Stearley, was born in Jackson township, Clay county, Ind., December 6, 1866; was married to Miss Elizabeth Dierdorff, March 31, 1889, to whom four children were bors- two girls and two boys. Mr. Stearley is a blacksmith employed by Weaver & Getz, Center Point.
ARTICLE 176.
Thomas Wesley Hutchinson, of the law firm of Rawley & Hutchinson, of Brazil, was born in Union county, Ky., January 20, 1861. From there his parents moved to Warrick county, Ind., thence to Henderson county, Ky., thence to Evansville, Ind., thence in about 1869 to Washington, Ind., thence in 1879 to Clay county, Ind., which has since been their residence.

Edward H. Thirey was born in Monterey, Clermont county, Ohio, October .
10, 1867. At the age of twelve years his parents located on the farm. A: the age of twenty-one years he entered the National Normal university, Lebanon, Ohio, taking the course in the commercial, civil engineering and teachers' departments. After devoting several years to surveying, insurance and travel, Mr. Thirey came to Sullivan county, and engaged with C. W. Wellman in the publication of the Encyclopedie Directory, of which he is the original projector and author.
ARTICLE 178.
George J. Kayser was born at Zoar, Tuscarawas county, Ohio, February 5. 1850. In 1864 he moved to Indiana with his parents, locating in Owen county. There he went to learn the shoemaker's trade, and in is;8 came to Clay City, where he became engaged in the shoe business until the fall of IS92, when he was elected to the office of county recorder on the democrati: ticket by a majority of 431, and on May 16, 1896, became the nomince for joint representative for the counties of Montgomery, Putnam and Cay.

From ISSI until ISot his time was divided between going to school, working in the mines, and teaching school. In 1891. in connection with John M. Rawley, he opened a law office in Brazil, Ind., in Zeller & Riddell's bank building, in which building they still have their office.
ITis early education consisted of a part of two or three terms in the public schools. In 1873 his father was killed in a mine casualty, leaving upon his brother and himself the care of the family. making any further attendance at school impossible. In 1881, having saved up some money, he attended a terni at the Staunton public schools, working in the mines on Saturdays. During this term, his teacher, MI. Markle, inspired him with the desire for n:ore education, and the resolution to have it. In March, 1883. he entered the Central Indiana Normal school. and acted as janitor for the buildings, to help pay his way. He began teaching in the fall of this year, and taught in all six terms, the last two of which he was principal of the Staunton schools. It was his custom to teach during the winter months. After his school was out he would attend school until his money was exhausted, then he would return home and work in the mines until the schools commenced. In 1886 he grad- uated from the teachers' course in the Central Indiana Normal school with high I onors and was subsequently chosen alumnus speaker for his class. In 1888. after pursuing a four years' course of study, he passed the examination of the Indiana Teachers' Reading circle, and was awarded a diploma. In ISSo he was admitted to the bar of the Clay circuit court, to practice law. In iSo he graduated from the law departmentof the university of Michigan, and in the same year was admitted to the bar of the supreme court of Indiana. In 1894 he was appointed attorney for the city of Brazil, which position he now holds.
ARTICLE 179.
Elmer P. Collins was born at Lawton. Michigan. August 31, 1862. Having acquired a commen school education, at the early age of seventeen years he engaged in railroading. in which capacity he continued up to the year 1894. In 1886 he came to Brazil irom Grand Rapids, Michigan, and four years later. August 14. 1890. married Miss Alice Combs, of this city. At the n:unicipal election held in the spring of 1894 Mr. Collins was elected a mem- ber of the common council of the city of Brazil from the third ward. rendering a valuable public service as superintendent of the water works construction, with which responsible position and duty his fellow councilmen entrusted him. La the month of June. 1896, owing to protracted absence from home, he resigned his membership in the city council. Mr. and Mrs. Collins have a neat and cosy cottage home on Atlantic street, in the north- west part of the city.

Thomas Phillips was born March 3. 1864, one and one-half miles north of Cory, Clay county, Ind .; lived on a farm till twenty-two years of age. Worked in store as clerk at different places in Indiana. Kansas and Colorado till 1891, when he vent to work in auditor's office in Clay county, Ind., which place he occupiedl until the death of Matt. R. Yocum, auditor, January 31. 1894. and on February 1, 1894. he was appointed auditor to fill the vacancy caused by Mr. Yceum's denise, and at the fall election in 1894, he was elected to the office of county auditor for a term of four years. In politics he is a Democrat. On Lle 30th day of December, 1891. he was married :, Miss Katie Stewart, daughter of Robert S. Stewart, of Brazil, Ind.
