JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP.
JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP, in Boone county, is located on the west line of the county, exactly in the center from the north to south line. This township, like most others in Boone county, does not lie in a square body ; if it had two square sections off the southwest corner of Washington township, it would be six by eight miles square; as it now is it contains forty-six square miles.
Some portions of the township are quite rolling, while others are agreeably undulating, and still others are level. The town- ship is a good one for the production of all kinds of grain and grasses common to the country. Corn, wheat, rye, oats and barley may be profitably cultivated in most parts of the town- ship. Walnut Fork of Sugar Creek runs through near the cen- ter of the township; its head-waters rising near the cast line, running a westerly course, and crossing into Montgomery county near Shannondale. Wolf Creek passes through the northeastern quarter of the township, running a northwesterly course, and emptying into Sugar Creek in the central part of Sugar Creek township. Neither of these streams is of much importance.
The I., C. & L. R. R. runs near the northeast corner of the township; there are no railroads through its territory. The county roads are very good, considering the newness of the country.
The improvements of the township will compare favorably with adjoining ones. The farmers are alive to their interests, and will, eventually, be handsomely rewarded for their enter-

prising perseverance. The people of Jefferson township are generally hospitable, intelligent, and of good repute before the world.
There are twelve school-houses in the township, valued at $6000. James Potts is the present Township Trustee, and ap- pears to be considerably interested in the cause of education.
The township casts over 400 votes, a small majority being democrats.
The people seem to be interested in the moral welfare of the township, as they have several churches and Sabbath schools.
