THE POPULATION OF TOPEKA.
Having reached the end of the compilation of the alpha- betical Directory, it is gratifying to note a substantial in- crease in the number of names over that of the previous issue,-conclusively showing that the city is growing in population as well as in beauty and prosperity.
The exact number of names in this compilation is 16,579; and it is customary, in making estimates of population, to allow four per cent. of the entire number of names for firms, public institutions, and such others as do not represent in- dividuals. After this deduction is made, the lowest approxi- mation is three to the name; but to avoid any possibility of overestimating, I have placed it at two and one-half. Yet this unusually low estimate shows our population to be as follows : 16,579-563 = 16,016; 16,016 × 2} = 40,040.
The enumeration was not confined to the corporate limits of the city, for the reason that it is frequently desirable to find persons residing in the suburbs, and as near as can be estimated the population residing in the environs of the city is 2,856; and it is earnestly desired that the good example of Potwin in becoming a part of the city may be emulated by all the other outlying districts before the next U. S. census is taken, in order to give Greater Topeka all the population it is legitimately entitled to as the true and only metropolis of Kansas.

THE FOLLOWING IS ONE OF NUMEROUS TESTIMONIALS:
W. A. Thomas, of Alyth, Scotland, gives Topeka flour quite a puff In an American milling paper. After saying they have better wheat and greater skill in making flour in Hungary thar anywhere else, he adds : "The nearest flour to Hunga- rian I have seen from the United States is this season's A. A. A., from Crosby Mill Company, Topeka, Kansas."
