This city has the finest public schools in the West, and we are building more of them. Everything reads in Topeka. A man that is not a graduate we do not want. We have Wash- burn College, that is a good and growing institution. We have Bethany College, for girls, that is under the immediate care of our own Bishop Vail. We have the Topeka Library, that is the best thing Topeka can show a stranger, and in which every citizen should continually take the liveliest interest. No boy or girl that is in the habit of going there will ever turn out bad; its influences are good, and counteracting a world of evil, and widening and deepening in its hold upon our people. We expect to live to see it the Faneuil Hall of Topeka. Every- thing is educated in Topeka. We knew a few years ago of a flock of three hundred country sheep passing down Kansas avenue, and such was the cultured influence of the city upon

them, that they followed a dog into one of our book stores, and for a while it looked as if the entire contents and literature of that book store was bound in sheep.
We hope our readers will not pass lightly over this history, for we have attempted to cover up a point or two that may be found by thought and a process of mental excavation. The historian of this directory once thought that "Peek's Bad Boy" was the bottom hardpan rock of worthless literature, but as he grows older, he finds that nothing is bad by comparison, unless he is sure that he has come to the real end of the road. And it has been reached for sure. After Mark Twain wrote and published Huck Finn, mankind has just grounds to criticise any plan of creation that included Clemens in it. To start with, we believe that the book is a lie from the beginning, and the fabrication does not stop with Finn's adventures; but the author has seen fit, for the sole purpose of inserting a joke or two, to change the course of the Mississippi, make it 2,000 miles longer than it is, put Arkansas on its east bank, locate Cairo above St. Louis, and have an eddy of some sort in its current, by which the fellows on the raft were carried a hundred miles up stream.
We end this history just as the news comes of another new thing in Topeka, a Democratic mayor. A house divided against itself cannot stand, and it is a pleasant thing to see policemen and letter carriers, for once in our lives, of the old-fashioned, brass-mounted, and-of-such-is-the-kingdom-of-heaven, locofoco, Democratic faith.
We have 7,000 registered voters in this burg, and this does not include Wyandotte or Armstrong. I would rather be a dweller in the Topeka cemetery, in sight of the constant improvement of Parkdale and Sells' macadam road, than a live smeller of the pork-house stenches of Kansas City.
We have more newspapers than we have time to read. Sui- cides continually increase in number, and we hope that our yearly encouragement of this branch of business has not been wholly without results.
The doctors of this city are numerous as the diseases they fight. Occasionally specialists come to the city, with a name consisting of all the consonants strung on a string, advertise in the papers and distribute their cards persistently on the street corners, and then in a few weeks leave hurriedly, to turn up in another locality, with a rearrangement of consonants. I re- member, years ago, of stopping at a hotel in Newton, where a specialist was staying, who exhibited in the bar room a multi- tude of bottles filled with tape worms, preserved in alcohol, of different lengths, vintage and manufacture, which could not help but intercept the eye on the way to the dining room, where, as you took a seat at the table, the pretty waiter handed

you a plate of maccaroni soup! How was that for appetite in the early days of the republic?
And now, readers, good bye! You will find in the pages of this directory any kind of a name you may be hunting for. They can be READ on any PAGE, and are at your BECK and CALL, in all colors, BLUE, GREEN, GREY and BROWN; and in this book a white man is BLACK and a black man is WHITE. You will find the YOUNG CHILDS name after that of AGE, and there is one solitary ANGEL, though why there should not be MOORE when both the LORD and KINGS live here, JUNO(D) ? There is a BIRD in the HAND WORTH two in the BUSH. There is also MUSICK, which consists of a TENOR and a POOR FIDDLER and PHEIFER. We have TANNERS and BLACK SMITHS, BACHEL- LORS and WIDDOWS, LONG and SHORT. You can find BARNES and HOUSE, and there are both SEXTONS and DEACON to the CHURCHES and PARISH. We have a BREWER of BROCK BEERS, and are supplied with SPRINGS, SUMMERS and WINTERS; have RAIN, SNOW and HIALE regularly. You will find FORTUNE in this city; we have good HOLMES beneath whose ROOF dwells PIETY and HOPE; here is the abode of the COFFIN and the GRAVES. You can either FRY or FREEZE in the TOWN or STATE; we have also the man who FOUGHT and BLED-SOE by KNIGHT and DAY.
You "AUTER" see our RHODES, LANES, RIVERS and SEA- BROOK, and our AKERS of WRIGHT BAUERS covered with Moss ROSE, THORNE and BRIER; and without GAMMON our RIVERS, STREAM and WATERS are SWIFT but cover LITTLE SURFIS; in SHORT, the LION, LAMB, DURHAM BULL, HOSS RACER, BUHRE, CRANE, STURGEON, WOLFF, VEALE, FOX, HAWKS, BAIR, ROBBINS, MARTINS, PARTRIDGE and PEACOCK, all occupy and fill A. LANG- FELDT WAND in this city, and which, with its thousands of other names in and out of the directory, constitutes the place about which the State agent of Appleton's Encyclopaedia said re- cently that
We draw the VAIL, or some other Town might BLow its HORN in a SIMLER WAY.
This history would be incomplete without special mention of the home road, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad. Briefly, therefore, come over that road to Topeka; and when you are compelled to leave here we know you will take no other.

STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE.
HE streets and avenues south of the Kansas river are num- bered uniformly, the number of a lot on one street cor- responding precisely with the lot in the same location on every street in the city, thus avoiding confusion, and making it easy to find any given locality. TOPEKA AVENUE is the base line, dividing the city east and west south of the river-in North Topeka KANSAS AVENUE being the base line-and FIRST AVE- NUE is the base line which divides the city north and south. All lots are numbered east and west from Topeka avenue, and north and south from First avenue.
Streets and avenues running north and south have the odd numbers on the west side of the street, and the even numbers on the east side. Streets and avenues running east and west have the odd numbers on the south side, and the even numbers on the north side of the same, increasing both ways from TOPEKA AVENUE, and are designated as per example: 105 Sixth avenue east, or 105 Sixth avenue west, as being either east or west of the base line, Topeka avenue.
North of the Kansas river the streets running east and west are named from the alphabet, commencing at "A" street, next to the river, next "B," "C," and so on to "K" street, near Soldier creek. The streets running north and south, north of the Kansas river, are named uniformly with those on the south side of the river, but are numbered 100 to the block, com- mencing at 101 at the first lot north of the bridge. All houses, therefore, between the river and "A" street number between 101 and 200, between "A" and "B" streets 201 to 300, and so on to "K" street.
The following guide to the streets of the city is arranged to readily assist in finding any given locality. The figures to the left of the name of the street indicate the number of blocks it is distant from the base lines, Topeka avenue for streets and avenues running cast and west, and First avenue for streets and avenues running north and south :

CITY OF TOPEKA.
Topeka, the county seat of Shawnee county, and the capital of the State of Kansas, was located on the fifth day of Decem- ber, 1854. It is situated on both banks of the Kansas river, and has a bona fide population of nearly 30,000 people; it con- tains about 11,250 lots, of which about 7,500 are improved, and a large number of buildings are in process of erection. Ad- joining the city in every direction numerous additions have been laid out, which are also well improved, and are very de- sirable locations for suburban residences. The lots are mostly 25 feet by 150 feet deep, and the streets will average nearly 100 feet in width throughout the city.
