THE

SANTA FÉ

ROUTE.

PRINTED BY DARLING & JOHNSTON, TOPEKA.

a

THE SANTA FE ROUTE.

AT has for some time been known to a few of the best informed persons in this F community, ( who also probably hold passes,) that a line known as the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad has been incorporated by, and is now doing business under the laws of Kansas,-at three cents per mile. What follows is intended to give the whole thing away indiscriminately.

You may be aware of the fact that the climate of this immediate patch of the Moral Vineyard is a unique combination of Labrador and Brazil. This fact has not been directly alluded to in any of the issues of the real estate Tri- Yearlys, or dwelt upon at length in the Agricultural Reports; nevertheless the imitation of the before-mentioned balmy regions, six months of the year for each, is very close.

It must also be regarded as indisputable, that our native or acquired air, the ozone of our voting precincts, is by spells absolutely pestiferous. It is true of every place on earth so far as heard from, and is something that even the increased revenues derived from prohibition, and the moral tone of the back alleys, have nothing to do with. It was not formerly so much so, but the climate has changed, and we, as we grow in products, population and grace, are obliged to submit to things that formerly we did not have, and wanted very badly.

You share in the common belief, prevalent also in the extensive field of our own imagination, and which thus far you have not said much about, that this beautiful book published for the purpose of booming the town, and to be given away by Sam. Radges as a souvenir of his repeated and disinterested labors for the public good, will next year lack some of the venerated names that now adorn its pages,-in fine, that the cholera may light down, and you may wish to light out. The idea, for the sake of brevity and clearness, is ex- pressed in the vernacular. In such a case, you are going to wish to go some- where very badly.

It was in view of this contingency, now about to arise, that the SANTA FÉ ROUTE was constructed, and for this have various deals, contracts, pur- chases, pools, and other monopolistic diablerie too tedious to catalogue here, been lately plotted and consummated, whereby the line mentioned, in connec- tion with the Atlantic and Pacific and the Southern Pacific, has become the GREAT MIDDLE ROUTE to Los Angeles, all the coast cities of Southern California, and San Francisco. The charms of these places constitute the sub- ject of a great part of the current conversation of the more cultured portion of mankind. This is a good country for pigs and mules, quadruped or other- wise, during the sap-rising season. That,-that is the home of humanity; the land of leisure and luck; the abiding place of prosperous desuetude. If in any given case you don't like your boarding house, you can move to

another one hundred and fifty yards up the hill, and be in another zone. The whole range of climates, all of them extra width and natural colors, is com- prised in a journey of fifty miles in any direction. Making the stranger happy and feeding him on bananas and ozone, is the principal industry of the mag- nanimons inhabitants of that blissful region. Disease, including cholera, decapitation (official or otherwise, ) and our peculiar and dangerous malady, . known as doleful dumps, is entirely unknown. Nobody in that favored re- gion has ever yet hypothecated the small circular evidences of a stated amount of collateral, or elevated the phalangeal tips of his pedal extensions toward the racemal portion of the modest Bellis Perennis, except from a congenital predisposition to final dissolution. All good Americans now go to California, -at least once.

Yet there is no compulsion. You need not unless you particularly wish, for about half way over lies Las Vegas Hot Springs. You are probably aware that the finest watering-place hotel on this Continent has lately been erected there. The one that was burned in 1884 is not now alluded to. The sense of opulence, the feeling of flushness, the general hilarity induced by that brilliant performance, induced the Company to immediately begin the erection of another, and, as is not unusual where people permit themselves to indulge in those financial sprees so common with corporations, of a bigger, a better, a finer, a solid stone, and a fire-proof structure. It does not even occupy the same site, but is perched upon the mountain side, where, in a Las Vegas sense, you can see all New Mexico and the glory of it. Yet very conveniently situated in respect to an unlimited quantity of hot water.

We will not make an inadequate attempt to turn ourselves loose on this sub- ject in this limited space. The charms of this renowned spot are, upon request, communicated to a waiting world in pamphlet form. So are most of the cap- tivations of this great unfrozen-in-winter and undusted-in-summer route across the Continent. You run an extreme risk of being both ill and unfashionable if you do not go somewhere during the summer. You must not go East ; that would be but meeting the epidemic half way. As to going West, we have to say, that if the trains of the SANTA FE ROUTE cannot outrun a cholera wave, we propose to quit the business. Coming back we intend to give it the right of way, and dodge it on the elevations. We trust this plan of circum- venting an epidemic, which we have copyrighted, strikes you forcibly.

Besides all the foregoing, there is a maxim that is entirely new in these parts, and which will undoubtedly impress you. It is indeed curious that the mercantile classes have not thought of its use in their business. It is, "Pat- ronize Home Institutions." If this does not catch you where you live, then the study of the classics ought to be abolished by law.

All further information on this subject, sweetly rounded at the close of the interview by some unobtrusive remarks as to the precise amount of collateral required, will be given by the silver-tongued Agent of this corporation at the corner of 6th and Kansas avenues, or by Mr. W. C. N. (no more at present ) Garvey, at the A. T. & S. F. Depot.
