The city is beautifully laid out, and con- tins some fine business blick, and private ro,idences, all lighted by vas. The lolis system of water-works is in use. Among Anh features.of the place are 4 hotels-the leading one being the Planters'- a news- paper, the " Messenger and Examiner," the only paper published in the county, an enterprising sheet, and well pritronized, 4 banka, 14 churches, good schools, & four- mills, plow manufactory, several carriage and wagon-shops, a foundry and machine- shop, a furniture factory. 2 planing and saw-mills. a handle-factorv. 15 distillerie- in thecounty, manufacture 350 barrels per day, the largest being those of R. Monarch & Co., and Eagle Distilling Co. The tobacco in- tere-t is large, 29 stemmeries being in op. eration here. Coal and iron are mined, and valuable marble-quarries are being profitably worked in the vicinity.
