Twenty-fourth Kentucky Infantry.

(CONDENSED FROM A LONGER ACCOUNT PREPARED BY COL. JOHN S. HURT.)

At the beginning of the war Kentucky had a consider- able military organization known as the "State Guards." The legislature passed an act providing for the "Reserves," and under this a company, afterward known as Company I, of the 24th Ky., was organized in Bath county, in July, 1861. John S. Hurt became its commanding officer, and he procured arms for his company from the military board of Kentucky. At this time it being apparent that the "State Guards" could not be relied on to execute the real will of the state, which was opposed to secession, but that it was influenced by its leaders the other way, the United States government determined to furnish arms to the I'nionists who would organize into "Home Guards." Through the influence of Senator Davis, Judge Robertson, Generals Nelson and Speed and others, many companies were thus furnished with arms. Among them were Com- panies K, of Montgomery county; C, of Powell; E, of Bath, and D, of Fleming, so designated in the 24th regiment.
