PREFACE.
This number makes the sixth volume of the Arlington Di- rectory. We publish Belmont this year, as promised two years ago, making it come every four years.
We wish to thank all who have aided us by furnishing in- formation and answering our inquiries.
The list of advertisers includes the enterprising merchants of the towns; their announcements deserve the attention of all who use the book.
The map has been corrected to date, and is lithographed by G. H. Walker & Co.
The book being bound in cloth, as heretofore, makes an appropriate ornament for the table in the drawing-room, as well as the office. The double list of the residents adds to its value as a book of reference.
Trusting it will find a place in most of the homes, and be found useful for the business man, we remain,
Respectfully, EDWARD A. JONES.

DIRECTIONS FOR GIVING AN ALARM.
When a fire is discovered, go to the nearest box to the fire, pull the hook down once, and let go. By listening at the box a small bell will be heard, which indicates that the alarm is being given. If possible, wait at the box and direct the firemen to the fire. Never send an alarm for a fire seen at a distance. Never give a second alarm for the same fire after the depart- ment has arrived, without an order from the officer in command at the fire.
Never open a box except to give an alarm of fire.
Opening the door does not give a fire alarm. Pull hook down on inside door and let go.
Telephone Alarm-Telephone subscribers are requested to call the Central Fire Station in case of a fire, giving the exact location of the same.
CHARLES GOTT, Chief of Department.

AS YOU CANNOT GET RICH
By hard work, try investing and speculating as others have done, and become rich ; remember the first step to wealth is to own your own home, and not throw your hard earnings away to landlords and have nothing ; now don't go away out 10 or 15-cent carfare from Boston, when you can buy land and houses just as cheap adjoining North Cambridge, where it is building up fast, and where you can sell or rent your place very quickly ; good house lots at 5 cents per foot and upwards ; town water in front of lots, shade trees on sidewalks ; stone given free to build all cellars ; money loaned to build ; good many lots fronting on Massachusetts Ave .; no taxes or in- terest for three years ; titles guaranteed.
