ARTICLES OF FAITHI, AND THE COVENANT,

ADOPTED BY THE MEMBERS OF THE

" SHAWMUT CHURCHI."

ARTICLES OF FAITII.

-

WE believe that there is but one God, a be- ing perfect in every natural and moral attribute, subsisting in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost; the same in substance, equal in power and glory.

We believe that all Scripture, both the Old and the New Testaments, is given by inspira- tion of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in Man righteousness, that the name of God may be per- fect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

We believe that man was originally holy; and that he sinned and fell from that state, by

4

the trangression of God's Law; and that in con- sequence of the fall of our first parents, all man- kind, in their natural state, are destitute of any thing to recommend them to God's righteous favor.

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, by his obedience, suffer- ings and death, has made an atonement sufficient for the salvation of all mankind, that pardon and eternal life are freelv offered to all men, on con- dition of repentance of sin, and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ; and that Christ alone is the way, and the truth, and the life.

We believe that while men are under obliga- tions, perfectly to keep the law of God, the spe- cial influences of the holy spirit are absolutely necessary to incline and lead us to repent and believe-to renew and sanctify us-to bring us out of a state of nature into a state of grace-to . keep us in it, and fit us for glory-that all true christians will be preserved unto eternal salva- tion; and that God, from before the foundation of the world, purposed to secure the repentance

and salvation of a great multitude, whom no man can number.

We believe in the resurrection of all the dead, and a day of final judgement, when every one must be judged according to the deeds done in the body, consequent upon which, the righteous will enter into life eternal, and the wicked will go away into everlasting punishment.

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ has a visible Church on the earth, the ordinances of which are Baptism and the Lord's Supper, to be observed to the end of the world; that those on- ly are to be admitted to the Church, who give credible evidence of being renewed by the Holy Spirit, and make a public profession of their faith in Christ; and that none but members of the Visible Church, in regular standing, have a right to partake of the Lord's Supper; and that only covenanting believers and their households, are proper subjects for the ordinance of bap- tism.

COVENANT.

In the presence of God, His Iloly Angels, and this Assembly, you do now solemnly avow the Lord Jehovah to be your God, and your por- tion for ever .- You do solemnly dedicate your- selves to God the Father, as your chief good; to the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and the Holy Spirit as your Sanctifier .- You do solemnly devote to the one living and true God all your faculties, powers and possessions; cove- nanting that you will be the Lord's forever; en- gaging, that, through the aid of his spirit, you will love him supremely, and obey him faith- fully ; that you will give diligent attendance to

his word and ordinances ; that you will seek, above all things, the honor and interests of his kingdom ; and that you will aim, without ceas- ing, to adorn your profession hy a blameless life, and by holiness of heart.

You do also now cordially join yourselves to this Church of Christ, and engage to submit to the regular administration of its government and discipline; to strive earnestly for its peace, edification and purity; and to walk with its members in the gospel order and fellowship.

Trusting in the grace of God, you thus cove- nant and engage.

In consequence of these professions and en- gagements, we, the members of this Church, affectionately receive you to our communion, and in the name of Christ, declare you entitled to all its visible privileges: we welcome you to the fellowship with us in the blessings of the Gospel, and on our part, engage to watch over you, and seek your edification, so long as our circumstances may permit, and your necessities may require.

8

And now, beloved in the Lord, let it never be forgotten, that you have here come under obligations from which you cannot escape; you can never withdraw from the covenant which has now been confirmed; wherever you go these vows will be upon you; they will follow you to the bar of God, and will abide upon you for- ever.

Now, the God of Peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, that Great Shepherd of the Sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work, to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever,- AMEN.
