PUBLIC

LIBRARY,

PREFACE.

36

V

Two years have elapsed since a DIRECTORY OF BROOK LINE was published, and the many changes, both in busi- ness and residences, make a new edition very much needed.

The Town of Brookline was incorporated A. D., 1705 ; population, 1682. Its present population (A. D., 1877), is about 7500. In 1844 the town contained, within its geographical limits, 4695 acres, a portion having, since then, by legislative enactment, been set off to Boston ; its present taxable area is 376712 acres.

We have endeavored to present a trustworthy record of the inhabitants, business firms, public officers, institu- tions, and the societies of the Town, and we trust we have succeeded in so doing, to the satisfaction of our patrons and the public generally.

We have been engaged in compiling and publishing Directories for nearly twenty years, and our experience during that time has enabled us to so systematize and ex- tend our business, that from a comparatively small begin- · ning, we now publish a larger list of Directories than any firm in this country. We keep constantly employed a large corps of canvassers, compilers, proof-readers, print- ers, and binders, and the utmost care is taken in each department to avoid errors, and to present our works in an acceptable manner to our patrons.

Having removed our office from 242 Washington street, Boston, to more commodious quarters in the gran- ite building, No. 22 School street, we shall be pleased to see all of our patrons and friends who may wish to refer to our Directories, complete files of which are always kept on our shelves.

Americans visiting London, England, will find our directories on file at Messrs. Henry F. Gillig & Co.'s, 449 Strand, Charing Cross.

Many thanks are due to the business men of Brookline and Boston, who have so willingly aided us in our efforts this year, and hoping we may merit a continuance of the same in the future, we remain,

Very respectfully,

October, 1877. GREENOUGH & CO.
