Remarks.

1. The interior vault and the cornices are of wood painted in white and gilded.

2. The walls are of cement and fire proof.

3. The paintings of the principal cupola represent the four Evangelists and their emblems, viz : The eagle for St. John, the winged man for St. Matthew, the winged Lion for St. Mark, the winged ox for St. Luke.

4 Besides the angels painted above the Evangelists, there are be- neath ; (a) the keys of St. Peter ; (b) the arms of Archbishop Bourget, second bishop of Montreal, who began this church ; (c) the arms of Archbishop Fabre, under whose patronage the church is being continued ; (d) the emblems of Pope Leo XIII.

5. The paintings in the vault of the apsis represent in the cen- tre, the power of the keys given to St. Peter, at the right, the mar- vellous draft of fish, and at the left, Christ meeting st. Peter on leaving Rome.

6. The inscription around the cupola signifies : « Thou art Peter and upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it ; and I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of Heaven. »

7. On the cornice of the apsis we read the following : « Whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth it shall be bound also in Heaven and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth it shall be loosed also in Heaven.

8. In the centre of the apsis the inscription in gold letters reads as follows. " Feed my sheep."

9 Under the paintings of the Evangelists there is the following : « Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God almighty who was, and who is, and who is to be. " It is the song of the winged animals heard by St. John as related in the book of the Apocalypse.

10. At the entrance beginning on the left, we read the legend of St. James the Great, patron of this Cathedral, taken from the Bre- viary.

He was one of the three apostles for whom the Lord had a special predilection.

In Judea and Samaria he converted a great number of people to the Christian faith, in Spain he made some conversions, in Jerusalem he was condemned to be beheaded. He was the first of the apostles who shed his blood for Jesus Christ.

11. Around the transept is the answer of Jesus to the ambitious question of the mothe of the apostles St. James and St. John. « Jesus answered. You know not what you ask. Can you drink the chalice that I shall drink ? The apostles answered : We can drink it. Jesus said to them : « Of my chalice indeed, you shall drink, but to sit on my right or left hand, is not mine to give you, but to them for whom it is prepared by my Father.

12. The building will cost about one million dollars.

13. It has been found from experiments that the acoustic proper- ties are very good and the heating will be comparatively easy.

14. An electric organ of great power will be installed in October 1893.

List of the work to be done in the interior of the Cathedral.
