INFORMATION FOR YOU.

Before ringing in an alarm be sure that a fire actually exists.
Do not give an alarm for a fire seen at a distance, as all needless alarms are an expence to the town, and should be avoided as much as possible.

MISCELLANEOUS DEPARTMENT
To give an alarm, pull down the hook in the box once (without jerking) and let go. Wait a few seconds and if you hear no clicking of the wheels, pull again (no clicking, no alarm) ; if then no movement is heard, go to the nearest box and try, after which, report immedi- ately, to the superintendent or at the station, the box out of order.
All persons giving fire alarms are requested to remain by the box, if possible, to direct the firemen to the fire. Each box contains a small bell which if heard before you pull indicates that the alarm has been previously given.
After the first alarm has been rung in, all other alarms or signals are given only by the engineer.
Tampering with any of the apparatus connected with the Fire Alarm Telegraph will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
SPECIAL NOTICE.
The fact that an alarm box is located near their resi- dence, and where the key is kept, should be known to all persons, both male and female ; and the simple manner of giving an alarm in case of fire should be a matter of common education. The Board of Engineers recommends to all persons who may see this notice, that they make all necessary inquiries to enable them, in case of need, either to get the key and pull an alarm in, or direct others to do so. Time saved in this way may prevent a conflagration.
JOHN H. ALLEN, Chief Engineer.
