FOREWORD.
THE first BROOKLINE DIRECTORY was published by the present publishers in 1868 and this for 1904 is the twenty fifth, representing not only a quarter of a century, but a period of thirty six years. The edition of 1868 required only 43 pages with single column of names on each page. The general directory of the present edition contains 138 pages with double columns on each page.
Great changes will be noticed in the map which has been entirely redrawn and printed in atlas form including a portion of Brighton known as Aberdeen and the territory between the Brookline line and the Com- monwealth avenue.
The scale is larger and all new ways are clearly indicated by the section line and index letters and figures and location can be readily found. The postal districts-Brookline, Boulevard and Chestnut Hill have boundaries in color. Improvements have been made in the Street Directory and House Atlas. The General Directory contains 9,647 names, many changes and additional names indicating the growth of the town.
A new department has been added containing lists of Births, Marriages and Deaths, Automobile Owners, Horse Owners and Theatre Diagrams. The Miscellaneous Department has been greatly extended. Some of the advertisers whose cards appear in the original edition of 1868 are represented in this of 1904.
Those who have supported the efforts of the publishers to make the Directory more valuable than before are entitled to the thanks of those who use it.
Respectfully, W. A. GREENOUGH & CO. Compilers, Printers and Publishers
