THE COMPILER'S INTRODUCTION.
I submit these thoughts to you, my generous patrons and the public, where my Directory is used, with a good and high mo- tive ; first to show the usefulness of the book, and secondly, to commend my course to your favorable regard.
Nearly all the people, are engaged in some business that requires a particular knowledge of each others names, partnership styles, location, residences, professions, articles of traffic, &c. Every citizen is liable to be wanted by the government, and each looks to the government for protection. Hence, every one's name, and whereabouts must be known, and such knowledge should be in a convenient form for instant reference. This shows the need of a Directory. But, aside from this, who will say that our civiliza- tion is not enhanced by such publications ? . Do they not furnish the best possible pictures of the state of business and the prosperity of our times ? How grand a discovery would be that of a Direc- tory of Rome in the days of the Caesars, or of Pompeii, at the time of its fall ? Nothing could equal its importance to the historian.
Some people, unused to town Directories, try to argue that such books are unnecessary ; they wish to know the people of cities, but they don't wish the city people to know them.
I cannot see why the city Directory, composed, as it is, in great part, of the names of laborers, is more important than a Directory of the farmers and manufacturers of our rural districts. Some persons, amply able, are too parsimonious to subscribe for such a book. One man excused himself by saying he had two books in his house already. Surely " A little learning is a dangerous thing."
The excellent town clerk of Beverly, told me that thousands of people consulted the one copy of my last Directory of that town, which he kept in his office.
Some towns even make appropriations out of the public funds in aid of Directories, as well as for historical publications, as pro- vided for by statute law.
I should do wrong and act in a cowardly manner, if I failed here to give some of my observations in respect to the reasons why certain great houses do not patronize local Directories.
I know a good deal about this business, having been engaged in it since 1857, and having canvassed all the New England States, New York, New Jersey and Virginia. Great firms often set up a dirty business in a town, which renders the locality unhealthy and

disagreeable. Of course they do not feel any deep regard for the interests of the town, and are apt to find fault with their tax offi- cers. Other great houses, living themselves in the cities, hunt up places in the country where labor is cheap, and water power, or room, or situation affords facilities, and there coin their millions to spend in Europe or other congenial climes. Of course, when called upon to patronize the local Directory, they turn up their noses at such an affair. What do they care about that town ? They "only have their factories there." Others will tell me they "only go there to sleep nights," and " the place costs them too much already." One man told me once in a certain city, that he " only had his factory there ; he cared nothing for the town." Imagine mye surprise, when two years afterwards, he was elected Mayor.
But this is but one side of the picture. Most people welcome the Directory as a benefaction. I remember, when I collected or- ders in Brookline and Jamaica Plain, for the first Directory there, the business men vied with each other in patronizing my book. They signed the advertisement blanks impulsively, voraciously. All I had to do was to ask where each one would have his adver- tisement printed in the book. Twenty-eight firms gave a page each, and sometimes didn't even inquire the price before signing. I suppose it is well understood, that I always insert the names in the general Directory, as a gratuity. This is my offering to the people, and I trust it is beneficial to every one. The advertise- ments and subscriptions, are my only remuneration and reward; for truly there don't seem to come honor or fame from the success- ful labor of the Directory publisher. However, no one perhaps ever received more praise, or higher, than the writer.
Of my Directory of Boston, which I published ammally for many years, till the great fire of 1872 destroyed my printing and publishing establishment at 8 Congress Square, the Boston Even- ing Transcript said : "As a business Directory, this work appears to be more thorough and full than any previous publication of the same class."
The Boston Courier said: " It is the most complete work of the kind yet published."
The World said : "The volume compiled by Dean Dudley, whose name is a sufficient guarantee for its correctness, contains the names of all business men in the city of Boston; cach branch of business arranged alphabetically, under appropriate heads, with a complete index referring to every name. It contains, also, a hand- some and accurate map of Boston."
This Directory was thought worthy of being stolen by a rival publisher. And when, good, easy fellow, he had got his book printed, I went into the United States Conrt and convicted him o

piracy, obtaining heavy damages therefor; doing all this law busi- ness myself, without any other counsel. The same pirate snbse- quently tried to steal my Cambridge City Directory, and obtained many orders by carrying my book around, as if he had a right to do it, or was the regular publisher. As soon as this fact came to my knowledge, I sent to the advertisers in Cambridge, and seventy of them revoked their orders, sending an autograph note to the pirate, forbidding him to act upon their order at his peril. Such was the estimation in which my Directory was held by the people of the University City. When my health failed, and my office was destroyed, I sold my right to the Cambridge Directory for twelve hundred dollars, although a few years previous I had taken the book from the editor of the local newspaper, as a gift, he telling me, that he had lost several hundred dollars by the last issue. This local editor was a very generous, upright, honorable gentleman who did as well in his line as most editors do. Their bns- iness being to talk, scribble, and comment on works and things they could not do themselves, often they have no just conception of matters by them criticised and damned.
The local newspaper publisher of one town, out [of spite, avarice and mean rivalry, has done his utmost to injure this Direc- tory. In order to deter others from giving advertising patronage to this book, lest it might diminish his own profits in his village, he has lied and slandered my Directories in a rough and inhospit- able manner. All this I fain would ignore. I am too busy to stop to fight. But my friends and patrons deserve a fair explanation from the author.
