DEALERS IN DRY GOODS,
Agents for the Celebrated and Popular "White " Sewing Machine.
Read a few of its superior advantages. It is so simple in construction that little or no instruction is required to become proficient in its use. A child can use it. It has a self-setting needle. Its upper tension is easily controlled, and after being once regulated, is automatic, requiring no change for any kind of ordinary family work. It is the lightest running machine made, and is nearly noiseless-features which no lady can afford to overlook in the selection of a sewing machine. It is adapted to any kind of sewing, from the lightest muslin and silk to the heaviest woolen or cotton goods, and guaranteed to execute any kind of work ever wanted WHITE in a family. It has the best treadle ever attached to a sewing machine, it being so constructed as to operate with perfect ease, and without. fatigue to the most deli- cate lady. Its working parts are case-hard- ened Iron or Steel, and so constructed that the " lost motion " in all the wearing parts from long and constant use can be taken up by the simple turning of a screw. Its shuttle is comparatively self-threading, made of solid steel, and carries a larger bobbin than almost any other family sew- ing machine. The tension can be changed without removing it from the machine. It has more room under the arm than most other machines, making it very desirable for dress- makers, seamstresses, tailors, and others, who often wish to carry the fabric under the arm without crushing it. It has a device by which the bobbins can be filled without run- ning the entire machine, thereby relieving it from wear for this purpose, as also relieving the operator of the necessity of removing the work or attachments, as is the case in nearly all other machines. It has a double steel feed, or a feed on both sides of the needle, which enables the operator to carry the fabric through either side of the needle, as may be desired. This feature is found in no other inachine, and is an advantage which should not be overlooked. The result of this combination is the " WHITE," the best Family Sewing Machine in the world.
200 manufactured daily the past two years. Warranted for five years.

PREFACE.
1850
THREE years having passed since our last issue, we here- with present No. 5 of the regular series of the WALTHAM AND WATERTOWN DIRECTORY to our patrons, with the confidence of its welcome reception by them, as well as by the public generally.
As cities grow in importance and population, the direc- tory increases in value, as a book of reference, until large cities could not possibly get along without their annual publication. A good directory is a great benefit to a place, not only to the citizens, but to strangers and visitors, who are constantly referring to its pages for information of some kind. We also often receive orders from distant parts of the country for our directories, which shows that their circulation is not necessarily limited to the cities they represent.
We wish especially to call the attention of persons using the directory, to the importance of knowing the precise spelling of a name, before looking for it, as names, pro- nounced the same, but spelled in various ways, will appear on different pages, and at quite a distance from each other.
