PREFACE. 185
IN presenting to the public a new DIRECTORY OF WALTHAM AND WATERTOWN, and No. 6 of the regular series, it has been our aim to furnish our patrons with a book of reference, distinguished for its fulness, correctness, and typographical beauty.
The thriving manufacturing towns here represented, continue to gain in population and business importance, and it is but rea- sonable to predict that in no distant future they may develop such business resources and population as to follow the example of other large and growing communities, in assuming a city form of government, and will find an annual Directory needful to repre- sent their population and business interests.
All towns at the present day of any considerable importance and population, find a good Directory a great convenience to both citizens, and visitors who are constantly resorting to its pages for information of some kind. Orders not unfrequently come to us for our directories from distant parts of the country, indicating that their circulation is not limited to the localities they represent.
The attention of persons using the Directory is especially directed to the importance of knowing the exact spelling of a name before looking for it, as names pronounced the same are frequently spelled in different ways, and appear on different pages remote from each other.
