INTRODUCTORY

Boston University was chartered by the Massachusetts legislature in 1869, the original incorporators being Isaac Rich, Lee Claflin and Jacob Sleeper. The business affairs are vested in a corporation of not more than fifty trustees, whose only qualification for membership is their election, ten of whom may be nominated by the Alumni. The educational affairs of the University are administered by a University Council, consisting of the President of the Uni- versity and the Deans of the various departments; a University Senate, con- sisting of the Council and the professors of the various Faculties. The Con- vocation consists of all those who have been promoted to degrees.

The University includes the following departments: The College of Lib- eral Arts (1873) ; the College of Business Administration (1913) ; the School of Theology (1871) ; the School of Law (1872) ; the School of Medicine (1873) and the Graduate School (1874). The University is also doing im- portant work through late afternoon and Saturday courses for Teachers, through Summer Session Courses, through the Community Schools of Relig- ious Education, and through extension courses in recreational leadership for Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, etc.

The chief benefactor of the University was Isaac Rich, in whose honor the Institution founded sixty-three free scholarships. Since then the Univer- sity has founded over two hundred other scholarships, as well as four fellow- ships.

During the year 1916-17 a fund was established to be known as the Augus- tus Howe Buck Scholarship fund, available to men in the College of Liberal Arts with unusual promise in mental ability, physical fitness, force of character

7

and other personal qualities, promising later usefuless. Appointment is made in the Freshman year, and may continue throughout College life and, if the career warrants it, through a subsequent year or two.

The property held by the institution is valued at $3,338,210,72. The num- ber of instructors at the present time is '232, and the number of students 2,500 men and 900 women. This does not include students enrolled in extension courses and community schools which totalled over 3,700.
