GRAVESTONE INSCRIPTIONS

LEE. MASS.

INCLUDING

ALL EXTANT OF THE QUARTER CENTURY

1826-1850

Carefully Reproduced

LEE, MASS. PRESS OF THE BERKHIRE GLEANER 1910

INTRODUCTION

1136221

The epitaphs in the cemeteries of Lee earlier than the period of this collec- tion were published several years ago-those prior to 1801 in the volume enti- tled, "Records of the Town of Lee from its Incorporation to A. D. 1801," and those for the period 1801-1825 in a pamphlet designed to supplement an indexed manuscript copy of all the town's records of those years.

At the time they were printed there was no thought of carrying the work further, but they have proved of so much interest, and so convenient for refer- ence that a continuation to the middle of the last century seems desirable; be- sides, it seems desirable that these scanty final records of the inhabitants of the town should be preserved in a more durable way than by their gravestones.

Anyone familiar with the old burial grounds of New England must realize how frail memorials in stone are in such a damp and frosty climate as our s. The yearly upheaval of the ground by frost causes the fall and fracture of some of the stones, and the weathering of a century almost obliterates some of the inscriptions. The sawed marble slabs which came into very general use for gravestones in this region about 1825, have proved less durable than those of the same material of an earlier date, which, laboriously wrought with the chisel, were left with a rough, thick base for the ground, so that they have remained more firmly in place. A considerable number of the sawed stones, weakened by the disintegrating action of water and frost, have broken near the ground. Some of them have been reset, frequently with part of the inscription hidden in the earth, and some broken into fragments have been removed to the rubbish heaps. Some of those destroyed have been replaced by other memorials, usually of a more durable character, but more often the grave remains unmarked. The later method of fastening the slab to a base is even less permanent, for unless the base is on a firm foundation it soon tilts, and after no long time the stone falls; besides, although the base may remain in place, the stone after a few years is likely to become loosened and separated from it.

A few of the oldest gravestones in town were brought from a considerable distance and are not marble, but no other stone was used during the first half of the last century- the granite obelisk in memory of Dr. Hyde, who died in 1833, excepted. This is a shaft 14 feet in hight, impressive in its severe plain- ness, and fittingly marks the resting place of that strict Calvinist who was the pastor of the Congregational Church of Lee for more than forty years, and who baptized, married, and preached the funeral sermons of more of the town's people than has any other person. There are several stately family monuments shown on the plates, and there are, also, a few granite memorials bearing the names of persons who died before 1851, but all have been erected in later years.

4

The second quarter of the last century is especially interesting and impor- tant in the town's history. From an agricultural community with a few strug. gling manufacturing industries in 1825, it had become one of the foremost pa- per manufacturing places in the country in 1850, and during that time the pop- ulation had more than doubled; yet its people remained remarkably homogene- ous, being mostly descendants of the early settlers, or immigrants from other New England localities. The slight advance wave of that flood of European im- migration which has swept over New England during the last sixty years was scarcely noticeable here at the middle of the last century. Until then most of the graves in our cemeteries were those of descendants of the Pilgrims and Pu- ritans. A few memorials bear names denoting Dutch or Huguenot ancestry, but nearly all such families had become amalgamated with the native stock. Altogether, the proportion not born in New England was very small.

Before the end of this period the last pioneer of adult age when the town was incorporated, and the last Revolutionary soldier residing in the town had passed away. Appreciation of the labors, struggles and sacrifices of the hardy, industrious and courageous men who felled the forest, cleared the boulder- strewn soil, and fought for our country's independence will surely grow with the years. The epitaphs of many of that sturdy stock appear in this collection, and perhaps the printed page will preserve them a little longer than their crum- bling gravestones.

The inscriptions in type represent the originals as closely as possible with the type at command. An impression of each was used for copy, so that a faithful transcript is given with the spelling and punctuation as on the stones. However, despite all care, there are several slight misprints. All found are mentioned in the notes, except the following: on page 49, fourth line from the bottom of the last column, an e is omitted from the word sweet,
