Lowell is a Great City
Lowell bases its claim to greatness on well-known and firmly founded fact. city of a thousand industries that employ scores of thousands of people and its. approximates 115,000 people and is constantly increasing. Its industries are gr ries, and its people are good people.
Lowell is beautifully situated at the confluence of the Concord and Merrimac The water power of these rivers was fully developed by a system of canals which city in a network, dividing the territory into seven distinct islands. Along the and along the river banks have sprung up myriad mills.
Within the city itself the streets are well paved and there are hundreds of 1 magnificent shade trees, well preserved, lining the curbs and sidewalks. The busi n of the city is very compact, and all business houses are accessible within a v. walking distance, and yet there is ample room for expansion within these same lim
Lowell is surely a versatile city. Its interests are not all commercial or manı ing. Lowell is progressive. Lowell seeks all the benefits that the modern city ne‹ it already has more than its share. It sent its minutemen to the Civil War with the Sixth Massachusetts and its sons fell at Baltimore, the first to die for the Union. commercial life Lowell has shown the way to textile greatness and its mills are mnon of industry known the world over. It is hard to find an article that is not made in ] It is commonly supposed that Lowell weaves cloth and that nothing else of conse is manufactured here. Lowell makes the ammunition hoists used on the battleshij cash carrier systems in use in the great stores, boats, boilers, broadcloths, plush, bi cartridges, hosiery, machinery, sail cloth which has been used by the America cup ders, patent medicines of national and international repute, scales, shoes and sl* The list of Lowell products begins with acids and ends with yarns. It reads somewht a tariff bill.
Is it to be wondered, then, that Lowell is prosperous? Its workers seldom st. They are cosmopolitan in character, but are rapidly becoming American by assimilat
Take the matter of thrift, for instance. The savings banks and co-operative bal are teeming with cash saved by the thousands. The savings banks held $39,452,623 . the people's savings at the most recent report. The people here own their homes to a large extent, and many of the workers not only live on their own property, but own other pro- perty as an investment.
It may be noted that Lowell not only has its golden opportunity of location on rush- ing rivers, but also has developed its opportunities wisely. It has collected its commerce into a single area, put its mills in the background, rimmed these with fine streets, well shaded, and lined with the mercantile establishments, and then built its homes close at hand. The ideal city, it is, for business and for commerce. The Boston & Maine system, and the N. Y., N. H. & H. Railroad run into and through the city, connecting it in every conceivable direction with the commerce of the world. The city is but 26 miles from Boston, and the trolley lines aid the steam roads in reaching the Hub and the other points in Massachu- setts and New Hampshire. The transportation system is very complete. In the next few years, it is confidently expected that the channel of the Merrimack River will be deepened to permit of commerce, thus adding a very desirable element to the local situation.
People who visit Lowell casually are impressed with the surprising fact that a manu- facturing city can be beautiful. Lowell is developing along these lines, but is already a beautiful city. Its great parks are models, and, when the ambitious plans now started are completed, the park system of Lowell will be genuinely magrificent.
Lowell, "The Workshop of the World" welcomes new people, mn w industries, new development, new enthusiasm, and shows you who would like to knowabout us that here is a place where law abiding citizens prevail, where industries are vard, where factories abound, where there is seldom excuse for idleness, and where the peuple are thrifty and energetic, strong in patriotism, watchful of their good name and that of Lowell. Lowell is wide open to the worker, but there is no room for the shirker.
The Lowell Board of Trade is the key that unlocks the doors of Lovell's future.
