Features and Departments of a City Directory

Your new, improved City Directory is the most complete and comprehensive catalog ever published of the inhabit- ants, business concerns and institutions of your city. It is much more than just an alphabetical list of names and addresses.

Your City Directory Contains:

1

An Alphabetical list of names and addresses of every resident, business concern and insti- tution, plus wife's name and if a widow the deceased husband's initial, and the occupa- tions of all. Principal officers or owners and a description of businesses are included as well.

2

A Householders' Directory including a Street and Avenue Guide. This section lists every street and where intersecting streets appear. It lists numerically every location on each street, naming the householder or business at each number and whether the person is a homeowner or renter and if he has a telephone. Similar information is provided on office and public buildings and their occupants.

3 A Classified Business Directory -listing every business, classified as to type, and showing names and addresses. It also lists every pro- tession, club, society and association, hospital and cemetery, labor organization, library, park and playground and school.

4 A "Yellow Section" or Buyers' Guide, where the advertiser may explain in greater detail the services or products he has to offer.

5 A Statistical and Historical Story of your city; plus miscellaneous other information.

LOWELL

INCORPORATED A CITY IN 1836

A Progressive Community

INDUSTRIALISTS!

From every point of view this city's advantages are manifest to you.

SPACE

Conveniently located; substantially constructed ; well-lighted properties ; small and large areas are now available and reason- ably rated.

WATER

For industrial processing, apparently of an unending quantity, the softness of which gives to it an unusual rating for manu- facturing purposes.

POWER

Electric, gas and water supplied at rates relatively lower than those of cities that are comparable.

TRANSPORTATION

Express, rapid freight and motor truck schedules afford fre- quent despatch throughout the day and night.

Successful manufacturing demands general workers who are well-schooled; craftsmen with technical knowledge; persons with disciplined minds and administrators with vision ; to bring to profitable fruition any industrial promotion. Lowell prides herself in the thought that she can supply these particular types.

INTRODUCTION

R. L. POLK & CO., publishers of more than 800 city, county, state and national Direc- tories, presents to subscribers and the general public, this the 1956 edition of the Lowell City Directory.

Confidence in the growth of Lowell's industry, population and wealth, and in the ad- vancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Lowell to the world.

The enviable position occupied by R. L. POLK & CO.'S Directories in the estimation of the public throughout the country, has been established by rendering the best in Direc- tory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Lowell Direc- tory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the city.

POPULATION

The population of Lowell at the time the U. S. Census was taken in 1950 was 97,249.

FIVE MAJOR DEPARTMENTS

The five major departments are arranged in the following order :-

I. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and profes- sional concerns the first major department is included on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Lowell, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the city.

II. THE BUYERS' GUIDE, separately paged, on tinted paper, is the second major department, and contains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and pro- fessional interests of Lowell and vicinity. The advertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In a progressive community like Lowell, the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.

III. THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY, the third major department, is printed on yellow paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such it plays an important part in the daily activities of the commercial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium.

IV. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, the fourth major department, is printed on green paper. In this section the numerical streets are arranged in numerical order followed by the named streets arranged in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the designation of homes and places of business having telephones.

V. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, the fifth major department is included on white paper.

MUNICIPAL PUBLICITY

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in un- biased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manu- facturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertise- ments of Lowell.

THE LOWELL DIRECTORY LIBRARY

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Lowell City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Chamber of Commerce, for limited free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 500 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progressive busi- ness and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

LOWELL

Incorporated a town March 1, 1826; a city in 1836; the third city incorporated in Massachusetts

Lowell in the beginning of the 19th century was a village containing forty-five or fifty houses.

Lowell's natural advantages soon attracted artisans, as well as farmers. In 1796, the Pawtucket canal was built primarily for transportation purposes, but in 1820 it was har- nessed to furnish power to the textile mills beginning to flourish here. These cotton mills were built to supply cloth for the American trade, replacing that formerly imported from England.

In 1835 a steam railway was built, a necessity because of the growing importance of Lowell as a business center.

Lowell in Nation's History: Two Massachusetts governors resided here: General Benjamin F. Butler and Hon. Frederick T. Greenhalge. Among other Lowell citizens who have been pre-eminent in public affairs are Hon. Charles H. Allen, the first governor of Porto Rico and assistant secretary of Navy under President William Mckinley; Hon. Wil- liam A. Richardson, secretary in Grant's cabinet, Lucy Larcom, the poetess, and his Emin- ence William Cardinal O'Connell.
