Organization of the Church.
October 29th, 1865.
BELIEVING that the interests of religion require the forma- tion of a Church in Ward One, we, a company of believers who profess faith in Christ and acknowledge him to be the Saviour of mankind, to effect this purpose, in connection with the Society which has been formed to build a house of wor- ship in said ward, do hereby organize ourselves into a Church of Christ.
NAME.
In love to the memory of the deceased ministers of New England, this Church shall be called the Memorial Church.
BOND OF UNION.
Love to God and good will to men, shall be our bond of union.
PRINCIPLES.
This Church shall be Congregational in its form of govern- ment and discipline, in accordance with the legal interests of the Society with which it is connected. It will seek the rela- tions of christian fellowship with other evangelical churches, by the mutual transfer of members, by ministerial exchanges, by sacramental communion, by mutual councils, and by all suitable modes of co-operation.
PROFESSION.
For substance of doctrine as set forth in the Scriptures, we adopt the articles of faith which are contained in the follow- ing formula :
unfession of Faith.
WE believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of The Apostles' Heaven and Earth : and in Jesus Christ, ITis only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Creed. born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried ; the third day he rose again from the dead, He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty : from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. $
We believe in the Holy Ghost ; the Holy Catholic Church; the Communion of Saints; the forgiveness of sins ; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
We believe that the Holy Scriptures came not by 2 Peter 1: 20, 21 the will of man, but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost : that they are profit- able for doctrine, for reproof, for instruction in right- 2 Tim. 3: 15, 16 eousness ; and are able to make us wise unto salvation by the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
We believe that all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God: that whatsoever is born of the flesh is flesh : and that except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
We believe that God is love : that in this was man- 1 John 4: 8, 9 ifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent ITis only begotten Son into the world that we might live through him : and that this is his command- ment, that we should believe on the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another.
Romans 3: 23
John 3: 5,6
1 John 3: 23
CONFESSION OF FAITH.
5
We believe that according to the eternal purpose and grace of God, Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners : that he hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God : that he that believeth on the Son hath life, and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.
2 Tim. 1 : 9
1 Tim. 1: 15
1 Peter 3: 18
John 3: 36
We believe that the Holy Ghost, the Comforter, whom the Father sends in Christ's name, convinces the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment : and that as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the children of God.
John 15 : 26
John 16: S-11
Romans 8: 14
We believe that Christ hath instituted in the Eph. 2: 19-22 Church ;- which is the household of God, the Body Eph. 1: 22-23 1 Tim. 3: 15 of Christ, the temple of the Holy Ghost, the pillar and ground of truth-two Sacraments, Baptism and the Mark 16: 16

avenant.
SINCE it hath pleased God to manifest Himself will- ing to take repentant and believing sinners into cov- enant relation and interest in Him, to become a God to them, and own them as his children, and according- ly, to command them to consecrate themselves and their children to Him ;
We do therefore, humbly, sincerely, and gratefully enter into this gracious covenant.
We take the true and only God to be our God, con- secrating ourselves and ours unto Him forever.
Matt. 11: 29
We take upon us the yoke of Christ, our Saviour, to be his servants and disciples, and, henceforth to live not for ourselves, but for him who died for us, and rose again.
Romans 8: 1
Romans 6:
1 Thess. 2: 12
We will strive, in all things, to walk worthily of Him, who hath called us unto His kingdom and glory, and to obey the grace of God, which teacheth, that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live Titus 2: 12-15 soberly, righteously and godly in this present world, looking for the blessed hope, and the glorious appear- ing of the great God, and our Saviour, Jesus Christ, who gave himself that he might redcem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
We also promise to submit to the government of God in His Church, and to walk with our brethren in love, as Christ also hath loved us ; to be kind, tender- hearted, and forgiving one to another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven us, and to strive for the peace and prosperity of the body of Christ.
Eph. 5: 2
Eph. 4: 32 ( Thus, trusting in the grace of God, you promise. )
2 Cor. 5: 15
We yield ourselves up to the quickening and sancti- fying power of the Holy Ghost, to walk henceforth, not after the flesh, but after the Spirit in newness of life.
Response of the Church.
WE then, as a Church, do cordially welcome you into our fellowship and Communion, giving thanks to God, who has inclined your hearts to believe in His beloved Son, our Saviour.
We also promise to walk together with you in love, as becomes members of one holy family; to watch over you with gentleness, and to offer our prayers for and with you to the great Head of the church, that we may grow up together in the beauty of holiness before him.
"Now therefore ye are no more strangers and for- eigners, but fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God ; and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone."
Eph. 2 : 19, 20
We pray the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, of Eph. 3: 15-20 whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory to be strengthened with might by His spirit Eph. 3: 15-29 in the inner man; that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith ; that ye, being rooted and grounded in Eph. 3: 15-20 love, may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth and height ; and to know the love of Christ which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God.
Benediction.
THE Lord bless you and keep you ; the Lord lift up Num. 6: 24, 26 the light of His countenance upon you, and give you peace. Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according Eph. 3: 20, 21 to the power that worketh in us, unto Him be glory in the Church by Jesus Christ, throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

- Resolutions of the Church.
Adopted October 29, 1866.
Believing that an organized company of believers in Jesus Christ, and who acknowledge him to be the Saviour of man- kind, form and constitute a Christian church ; that a Congre- gational Church is one which vests all ecclesiastical power in a company thus organized, and that the Holy Catholic Church is the universal Christian brotherhood. Therefore
1. RESOLVED,-That the Memorial Church of Springfield, having declared in its creed its belief in the Holy Catholic Church, welcomes to its membership and communion all who love the Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity and truth, and who agree with it concerning the essential doctrines of the Christian religion, by whatever name they may be called.
2. That the success of the Church upon this basis during the first year of its history-a success which has brought at least five denominations into a happy communion of personal feeling and action-is our sufficient justification for re-affirm- ing this basis as a ground of Christian liberality, a guide to a wise and sound policy, and especially as the true basis for or- ganized Christian effort in the Ward in which our Church is located.
