are taking the lead, having improvements which put them far ahead of anything now in the market. These furnaces are made of the best plate iron, rivited to- gether like a steam boiler, which makes the escape of gas and dust an impossibili- ty, and insures a mild, healthful atmos- phere. They are easily managed, and very economical in the consumption of fuel. All in want of a heating apparatus are invited to an examination of their merits.

PREFACE.
In presenting number sixteen of the NEW BEDFORD CITY DIRECTORY to our patrons, we take this occasion to thank them for the generous manner in which they have biennially supported the work, and also for the polite attention of the citizens generally to our agents, while collecting the names and other statistics necessary to complete the Directory.
An unusual number of new names have been added to the Directory this year, and a larger percentage of corrections made, such as removals, changes of business, etc., etc., than in any previous two years since we com- menced its publication, showing that the old edition is comparatively worthless at this date as a guide to the citizens and business of the city. There are 9,360 names in the Directory this year, which is a large increase over those in the last edition, and adds to our book nearly forty pages, thus showing that New Bedford is increasing in population much more rapidly than the cities of New England generally, in these times of business depression.
We have removed our office from 242 Washington street, Boston, to more commodious quarters in the gran- ite building, No. 22 School street, where we shall be pleased to see all of our patrons and friends who may wish to refer to our Directories, complete files of which are always kept upon our shelves.
Americans visiting London, England, will also find our Directories on file at Messrs. Henry F. Gillig & Co.'s, 449 Strand, Charing Cross.
Persons who did not subscribe, and desiring a copy of the Directory, will find them on sale at Edwin Dews, 105 Union street.
Very respectfully, GREENOUGH & CO.,
Editors and Publishers.
