Preface

In the year 1700, on October 16, a Congregational Church was organized in the town of Harwich, Massachusetts, later known as the North Precinct. The early records of the society have been preserved by the parish until the pre- sent time, but many of the pages having become discolored and much of the writing indistinct, it became necessary to reproduce the records if they were to be permanently pre- served. Through the generosity of a member of the parish this is now done.

These accounts cover a period of ninety-one years, and report the activities of a parish located in a town which, since the year 1803, has borne the honored name of Brew- ster, commemorating Elder Brewster, of Mayflower fame. The historical value of these records would seem sufficient warrant for their preservation.

The present volume is an exact transcription of the con- tents of the original manuscript.

Previous unto it J said

J am apprahenfive y' ye comonnefs of ye sin of uncleannefs, together with ye publick counte- nance y' has been given to y' sin by toe many minifters and chhs both, may tend to render it lightly accounted off; its alfo pofsible y' Some may plead for it, on account of a pratended ne- cefsity. But let wretched men beware of mak- ing light of Gods comands and threts, left it be of them as in Ps: 50. 22. Now, Consider &c. men forget God while they seek to extenuate that sin, there being hardly any sin more severly thretned in the scripture then is ye sin of un- cleannefs.
