SOCIETIES, COMPANIES, Etc. PLUMMER HALL.


This building is located at 134 Essex street. It was erec- ted in 1856, from funds left by the late Miss Caroline Plum- mer, to the proprietors of the Salem Athenaeum.


The first story is appropriated to a portion of the library and the historical collections of the Essex Institute, and has two ante-rooms, one of which contains the periodicals and publication of societies received in exchange'; the other, the manuscripts and historical collections. In the large hall in the rear has been arranged the newspapers, pamphlets, and books of reference of the Institute.


The second story has a similar arrangement of rooms. The western ante-room is appropriated to the use of the li- brarian, and some of the principal works of reference, and the new books belonging to the Salem Athenaeum ; the east- ern, to the libraries of the Essex South District Medical So- ciety and the Essex Agricultural Society. The alcoves on the western side of the large room in the rear contain the library of the Salem Athenaeum ; those on the eastern that of the Essex Institute. The libraries of the several societies in the building contain about 46,000 bound volumes, besides a large collection of pamphlets.


PLUMMER FARM SCHOOL OF REFORM FOR BOYS.


This school was founded by the munificent bequest of Miss Caroline Plummer. It is a school for the instruction, employment, and reformation of juvenile offenders in the city of Salem. The amount of the bequest was $25,000, present fund $50,000; and the school went into operation September 23, 1870.


A Board of ten Trustees was chosen by the Mayor and Aldermen of the city of Salem, in May, 1855, and incorpo- rated by an Act of the Legislature on the 21st of May, 1855. The first meeting of the Board of Trustees was held Novem- ber 26, 1855, at which time a code of By-Laws was adopted, and officers were elected. The Board of Trustees for 1874 is as follows :-

SALEM ATHENAEUM.


Incorporated in 1810, was formed by the union of the So- cial and Philosophical Libraries. The former was organized in 1760, the latter in 1781. Number of volumes 15,500, which are deposited in Plummer Hall, 134 Essex street.


Annual meeting for the choice of officers, last Wednesday but one in May.

ESSEX SOUTHERN DISTRICT MEDICAL SOCIETY.


Consists of all those members of the Massachusetts Medical Society who reside in Lynn, Swampscott, Nahant, Saugus, Marblehead, Salem, Danvers, Middleton, Beverly, Wenham, Topsfield, Ipswich, Hamilton, Essex, Rockport, Gloucester, Manchester, and Peabody.


The Society was formed in 1805, in pursuance of a vote of the Massachusetts Medical Society, authorising the establish- ment of district or subordinate associations. The Library is annually increased, and contains about 1,000 volumes ; it is deposited in Plummer Hall, where the regular quarterly meetings of the society are held.


Annual meeting on Tuesday of the week preceeding the meeting of the Massachusetts Medical Society.


Officers elected, 1873 .- President, Edward B. Peirson, of Salem; Vice-President, James M. Nye, of Lynn; Treasurer, William Mack, of Salem ; Secretary, Charles A. Carlton, Salem ; Librarian, William Neilson, of Salem.


THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE.


This Association was organized in 1848, by the resolution of the older Association of Geologists and Naturalists. It holds its meetings, annually, in 'August, in various parts of the country-each meeting continuing for a week or longer. The twenty-third meeting will be held in Hartford, Conn., in August, 1874. The officers elect are, President, John C. Leconte, of Philadelphia ; Vice-President, Prof. C. S. Lyman, of New Haven ; General Secretary, Dr. A. C. Hamlin, of Bangor ; Permanent Secretary, F. W. Putnam, of Salem, and a Board of Direction called the Standing Committee. The papers read at each meeting are printed in octavo volumes, twenty-two of which are issued and for sale at $1.50 each. There are about eight hundred members resi- ding in various parts of the country, and the number is rapid- ly increasing. The Library of the Association and its stock of publications are in charge of the Permanent Secretary, whose office is in the East India Marine Hall, Essex street, Salem.

ESSEX INSTITUTE.


Incorporated in 1848, was formed by the union of the Essex Historical Society and the Essex County Natural His- tory Society.


The Library, which conteins about 27.000 volumes, with the historical collections, also portraits, including several of the former Presidents of the Historical Society, and some of the early settlers of New England, are deposited in Plummer Hall. The scientific collections have been placed in the custody of the Trustees of the Peabody Academy of Science, and have been arranged, with the Museum of the East India Marine Society in the East India Marine Hall.


The Institute publishes a Monthly Bulletin and a volume of the historical collections annually.


Two exhibitions of Fruit and Flowers are held monthly, at their rooms in Plummer Hall, during the summer and autumn. Annual meeting on the second Wednesday in May.

SALEM LYCEUM.


Was formed the 18th of January, 1830, and organized as an Incorporated Association on the 2d of April, 1830. The introductory lecture was delivered in the Sewall-street Meeting House, by Hon. D. A. White.


The purchase of an annual ticket makes a person a mem- ber of the corporation ; and the price of a ticket has never been more than ONE DOLLAR. Over six hundred lectures have been delivered in the annual courses.


The Legislature, on the 20th of April, 1852, passed an act, making Daniel A. White, Stephen C. Phillips, George Peabody, their associate petitioners and successors, and the male citizens of the city of Salem, of twenty-one years of age, purchasers of tickets to the twenty-third course of lectures, a corporation by the name of the Salem Lyceum. At a meeting of the corporation, held May, 1873, the fol- lowing officers were elected :

PEABODY ACADEMY OF SCIENCE.


Founded in February, 1867. George Peabody, of London, placed in the hands of nine Trustees the sum of one hundred and forty thousand dollars ; forty thousand to be expended in the purchase of the East India Marine Hall, and the fit- ting up of the same, for the arrangement of a Museum, with which was incorporated the Museum of the East India Marine Society and the Natural History of the Essex Insti- tute, and for other purposes. The sum of one hundred thousand dollars to be kept as a permanent fund, the income to be appropriated for the promotion of science and useful knowledge in the County of Essex.


Trustees, Asa Gray, of Cambridge ; W. C. Endicott of Salem ; George Peabody Russell, of Bristol, R.I .; O. C. Marsh, of New Haven ; Henry Wheatland, of Salem ; A. C. Goodell, jr., of Salem ; James R. The museum is open to the public every day, except Sun- days, from 10, a.m., to 5, p.m.


YOUNG MEN'S UNION.


Organized 1855. For the benefit of the young men of all avocations in this community.


This association occupies convenient rooms ( No.94 Wash- ington street, Peck's block), and is in receipt of the lead- ing daily and weekly journals, of all parts of the country ; also the standard reviews and principal periodicals of the day. It has a library of reference, comprising the latest and most accurate maps.


No admission fee is required ; and the assessments, pay- able in advance, are fixed at the low price of $2 per annum.


All gentlemen, wishing to sustain such an institution in our city, or avail themselves of its privileges, are cordially invited to join.

SALEM FRATERNITY.


Organized April, 1869. Rooms Downing block, 175 Essex street. Rooms open every evening, free to all, from 7 to 10 o'clock. The Reading Room is furnished with the leading newspapers and periodicals, and an abundance of books. The rooms are also provided with boards for Croquet, Cue Alley, Checkers, Chess, Backgammon, etc.
