Public Schools: 46, including seven junior highs, and four senior high schools. Number of pupils in pub- lic schools as of Oct., 1959, 29,876. Number of teachers, 1,242. Total value of land, buildings and equipment as of Jan. 1, 1959, $23,935,625. City ranked second in Massachusetts in the following: maximum pay for elementary teachers with Bache- lor degrees, number of elementary teachers with degrees, and number of secondary teachers with Masters degrees. Modern Trade School graduates over 200 highly skilled workers each year. Aca- demic High School sends over 80% of graduating class to college each year. Number of parochial and private schools, 21. Number of pupils, about 11,099.

One new 750 gallon pumper purchased. Police Department, 1959: 372 paid employees, 48 pieces of motor equipment, 3 stations.
Public Works - 1959
Total paved miles of public streets, 300.591, with 3.81 } miles of new residential streets paved during 1959. Miles of storm and sanitary sewers, 469.703, with 9.71 miles of sanitary sewers and 7.31 miles of storm water drains constructed in 1959. Re- construction of .71 mile of city streets and con- struction of . 7 mile of highway under state aid. All sewage is treated and purified before discharge into the Connecticut River. Public waste and gar- bage collections given to all residents and busi- nesses, with downtown collections nightly and collections from the cellars of residences.
Telephone - (as of Nov. 1, 1959) There were 102,394 telephones in the three exchanges which serve Springfield, West Springfield, Indian Orchard and Agawam.
Telephone rates: one party line resident line, $6.00 plus tax; 2 party line, $4.90 plus tax; 4 party line $4.05 plus tax. Business lines, (1) measured busi- ness line, local service, $8.80 plus tax, allowing 80 calls; 514ยข each additional call; (2) straight business line, $16.30 monthly rate plus tax.
