Old Storrowton Tavern originally served the weary traveler in the hill town of Prescott, Massa- chusetts, as the Atkinson Tavern. It was built by John Atkinson shortly after the Revolution, upon his discharge from the Continental Army. The second floor has a large hall extending the entire length of the main building with a fireplace formerly used to heat it. In the old days, this was the most commod- ious space in the town of Prescott, Massachusetts and was frequently used for dances and other activ- ities. The Old Country Store, always a part of At- kinson Tavern, is still a part of Old Storrowton Tavern.
Looking across the green past the white en- trance gate, one sees the Gilbert Homestead, once a farm house in the Massachusetts town of West Brookfield. To the left of this is the Potter Man- sion, (with the tiny Eddy Law Office in between). This mansion, built entirely with his own hands, belonged to another Revolutionary War soldier, Captain John Potter of North Brookfield, and was completed in the late 1700's. Delightful rooms are available in the Potter House for overnight guests. In back of the Potter Mansion may be seen the great Stagecoach Barn in which coaches once put up over night at Greenwich, Connecticut, on the journey from Boston to Albany. Looking to the far left cor-
ner one may see the Village Blacksmith Shop from Chesterfield, New Hampshire, and next to it the Little Red School House where, for more than 100 years, the children from Whately, Massachusetts, learned their three R's.
Dominating the village at the far end and raised by a low terrace from the level of the green, is the Salisbury Meeting House. The way in front is ap- propriately named "Sabbath Street." In this fine example of early New England church architecture may be found one of the oldest hand-made organs in the country. To the left of the meeting house is the oldest of the village restorations, the lovely gam- brel-roofed Phillips House. This fine house was built in Taunton, Massachusetts in 1767. The Old Town Hall has now been joined to Atkinson Tavern to make the Old Storrowton Tavern as you see it today.
In season, there are still square dances in the great Stagecoach Barn with the old fiddler "calling" for the contra dances and quadrilles; and, that fam- ous old New England sport, Bowling-on-the-Green. Located as it is on the grounds of the Eastern States Exposition, Old Storrowton Tavern is close to many events continually planned in the buildings of the Exposition. The Garden Show is a regular annual event, as well as a Home Show, Horse Show and various other shows; a circus, hockey and bas- ketball games. Nearby, in the historic Pioneer Val- ley, are many places of interest for the visitor.
We will be only too happy to arrange a tour of Storrowton Village or give you directions to any points of interest in the Valley.

SCHOOLS

THE NEW WEST SPRINGFIELD SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
The new school, on its Piper Rd. frontage, is located close to the street to achieve economy in the installation of utilities, service drives, etc. There is an entrance from Piper Rd., and one from Amostown Rd., both leading into park- ing areas to allow parking automobiles away from the highway.
Approaching the Piper Rd, entrance, you face the auditorium on your left, and the gym- nasium on your right, with administrative offices connecting the two and facing on Piper Rd. Con- necting the auditorium with the academic wing is the two-divisional cafeteria, seating a total of 500 pupils (during school hours) or the same number of adults at community events (after school hours). The auditorium scats 1,100, and is adequate for community needs as well as school functions, The stage is sufficiently large to accommodate school, amateur or professional theatricals, concerts and the like. The auditorium is serviced by ample dressing rooms, storage areas, band practice room and small group practice rooms. There is an attractive lobby facing Piper Rd.
The gymnasium scats approximately 850 at a basketball game or other indoor athletic events. For classroom purposes it dívides into three sections for multiple use by various physical education classes, in addition to which there is a room for
small-group educational activities, There is plenti- ful storage at either end of the gymnasium.
The academic wing (connected to administra- tive offices, auditorium and gym by the cafeteria section) is made up of sufficient classroom space to properly care for the multitude of subjects re- quired in the modern High School program. There arc rooms of varying sizes to fit the subject needs.
The building itself is of red-brick venecr over cinder blocks. It is both practical and economical, with widespread use of directional glass block and clear glass to provide natural lighting. Floors are of asphalt tile, except in the shops; ceilings are acoustically treated tilc.
There are satisfactory areas to meet the needs in Homemaking, Industrial Arts and Art. The Building Committee recognized a need for these courses which stir a vital interest and enthusiasm on the part of many students not interested in a strictly academic program. For boys, there are adequate areas designed for Graphic Arts, General Shop, Agriculture, Metal Work, etc .; and, for the girls there are areas for advantageous teaching in Foods, Clothing, and Homemaking.
Thus every effort was made to plan a new High School from which our young people will come forth well-educated, and to which our older citizens will go forth for their many fraternal and com- munity activities.

I AM
I sit in the castles of business and at the hearthstones of many homes, mighty in my power to serve.
Through me is the power to make people talk with intel- ligence concerning their communities.
With extended hand I guide the wearied traveler, and to others shorten the distances between destinations.
In me abides the essence of democracy, as side by side is found all nationalities, rich and poor alike.
With uncanny certainty I unite long-lost friends and make glad the missing heirs.
Through me are protected the law-abiding by tracing the criminal to his hiding place.
Through me, in the friendliest way, new trade channels are opened.
I am the key that unlocks the gate to what your com- munity is, for all who would pass its portals.
