We gather the following facts from the official " Report of Operations," for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1856.

The operations for that year consisted largely of work preparatory to the manufacture, with rapidity and accuracy, of the new model Rifle Musket and Pistol Carbine, with Maynard's Patent Primer, which has required the fabrication of new tools or the alteration of old ones for every component part of these arms.

Three Rifle Muskets and three Rifle Pistol Carbines with their appendages, have been constructed with the greatest accuracy and in the highest style of the art, to serve as models or standards in the manufacture of all others. Among the principal results, we notice :

1003 Rifle Pistol Carbines complete, and components for 3000 more in progress. 5513 Guard Plates for Rifle Musket, model 1855.

From 1,000 to 10,000 each, of the various appendages, Wipers, Screw-drivers, Ball Screws, &c., for the new model and the altered arms.

500 each Artillery Musketoons and Sappers do. 720 Cavalry Rifle Carbines.

1001 Muskets, model 1842, rifled and sighted, rear sights graduated from 100 to 1000 yards range, with a large number of components of the same model. 4441 Tools completed.

17

UNITED STATES ARMORY.

Several important machines, among them are 6 power, and 4 hand Rifling machines, completed.

A complete set of standard verifying and working gauges, made with the utmost accuracy.

A large amount of labor and time has been spent in perfecting and arranging the Machinery, Machine Fixtures, and Shop Fixtures, preparatory to the regular work of manufacturing the new arms to the best advantage.

The Iron Fence on the east side of Union Square has been completed, and the Armory Grounds have been kept in thorough repair.

THE NEW WATER SHOPS belonging to the Armory, were, at the close of the last fiscal year, in a state of progress, as rapid as was compatible with thoroughness and durability. Up to that time some 40,000 cubic yards of earth had been excavated, and 22,500 cubic yards of rock cutting, 11,493 perches stone masonry dry and laid in cement, and 292,000 bricks laid in cement and mortar, accomplished.

Since that period the work has been carried vigor- ously forward, and it is hoped and expected that another year will suffice for the completion of this, one of the most important and beautiful works of the city.

We are happy to learn that several hundred of the new Rifle Muskets have been completed, and that there is no obstacle, at present perceived, to the completion of a number of thousands of these highly finished and effective arms during the year 1857.

A very desirable and valuable improvement which has been contemplated for several years past, will soon be effected. We refer to the construction of a highway on the west and north sides of the Armory Grounds on the Hill. This will not only be a very great con- venience to the Armory and to the whole of that part of the city, but with the addition of five or six acres of land, recently purchased for this purpose, at the north west angle of the enclosure, will add greatly to the symmetry and beauty of the public possessions in our city.
