IMPORTANT TO HOUSEKEEPERS.
THE Subscriber, at No. 8 Milk street, 4th from the Old South, continues to dress and purify feathers with Rey- nold's patent inachine. It is said that old beds, that have been thoroughly dressed in the above named machine, are better than new that have not been dressed. Rights to use the machine in the counties of Suffolk, Norfolk, Middlesex and Essex, are for sale by the subscriber. JACOB SMITH.
Boston, May 2, 1836.
About six months since I examined Mr. Smith's ma- chine for purifying feathers, and being satisfied that it must produce the effect for which it was intended, I sent a bed to be purified, which had been dressed and aired in the ordinary way, by an upholsterer, four times in four successive years, without any lasting effect. The pro- cess of Mr. Smith's machine upon this bed has proved completely effectual. The bed continues to be in perfect order, and the bulk of the feathers is permanently in- creased 25 per cent. F. A BRIEF ADDRESS TO THE PUBLIC.
FELLOW CITIZENS :- The astonishing and unexampled increasing popularity of the Botanical Medical practice is, and must continue to be in all time to come, an in- tensely increasing subject of contemplation to every friend of the human family. The system originated in the fertile and inventive mind of Dr. Samuel Thonison, who more than forty years ago introduced it to the world amidst opposition and discouragements that would have forever paralyzed the efforts of a less stout hearted, perse- vering and determined individual. The limits of this ar- ticle must prevent a detail of the struggles which the be- nevolent author had with power, prejudice and persecu- tion, in all their various forms, and from all their different sources, before he could overcome such hostility and es- tablish his system upon a permanent foundation. It is enough, however, to say, that through his own exertions he has accomplished his object, and now lives to behold the perfect and triumphant success of the safe, speedy and efficacious vegetable remedies, over the uncertain, dangerous and ever fatal operation of the mineral spcci- fics. But as in all new systems that have been attended with signal success, trespassers. will infringe on the rights of the original Patentee, so in this one, numerous indi- viduals without authority from the father thereof, and re- gardless of the golden rules of moral and equitable jus- tice, have entered into the practice of establishing public hospitals, and thus grasped at a division of the honors and profits without experiencing any of the trials and respon- sibilities that awaited-or possessing any of the know- ledge and merits of the founder. A more flagrant vio- lation of the moral and legal right cannot well be ima- gined.
13
Boston Annual Advertiser.
The consequence of this infraction of Dr. Thomson's Patentee is, that numerous mistakes are made in the ad- ministration of a great deal of spurious medicine, by such trespassers, which result fatally ; and such effects are charged as the legitimate consequences of the Tliomso- nian remedies, when in fact they are caused by the igno- rance and malpractice of those persons who are not, nor ever will be the legal agents of the Doctor. These things ought not so to be. Be not deceived, therefore. To avoid the evils described, the undersigned gives notice to all those friendly to the practice, that he still continues in the well known establishment, No. 23 Harvard Street (Harvard Street leads from Front Street, and is opposite No. 499 Washington Street, Boston), where every varie- ty of Thomsonian Medicine, prepared by the author himself, is administered in its purity. It would, perhaps, be needless to add that his house has ever been, and is now filled with patients in various degrees of convales- ·cence, because his infirmary has long been known to be the resort of invalids who could get no relief from the regular physicians. He would state, however, that Dr. Samuel Thomson himself, when in the city, makes this establishment his home, and can be consulted at any time in all delicate, critical and doubtful cases.
For sale at the Infirmary, Family Rights, Robinson's Lectures, and all other books explanatory of the system, together with every variety of pure Thomsonian Medi- cine used in the practice.
WILLIAM CLARK, Botanic Physician, And Agent for Dr. SAMUEL THOMSON.
N. B .- Among the trespassers referred to in the above, are Elias Smith, P. D. Badger, Hosea Winchester, N. S. Magoon and Mr. Darling, all of Boston-the latter has not been an agent of mine for a number of years. SAMUEL THOMSON.

THE irregularity in the numbering of many of the streets in this city, and others not being numbered at all, having given rise to much complaint, the publisher of the Boston Directory respectfully suggests, that if one or two intelligent persons in each unnumbered street would interest themselves in the subject, and apply to the Mayor and Aldermen, the defect might be easily reme- died, and the public convenience essentially promoted- the City authorities being always ready to number streets, when application is properly made to them.
Much inconvenience is also experienced from the frequent changes which occur in the names of wharves, in consequence of the custom of calling them by the names of their proprietors. This might easily be avoid- ed, by the adoption of specific names, as in the case of Long, India, Battery, and other wharves.
The similar names of different streets, courts, lanes, &c. also cause much inconvenience to the public. There are several streets, &c. in the city, of which there are two or more of the same name; several courts, having the same name with streets, &c. All this causes much embarrassment and difficulty in giving directions to the residences or places of business of persons in those courts. There is an Alden lane and Alden court ; Avery street and Avery place ; Bedford street, Bedford place and Bedford avenue ; two Bennet streets and a place of the same name ; Blossom street, Blossom court and Blossom place ; Bowdoin street, Bowdoin place and Bowdoin sq. ; Boylston pl., Boylston sq. and Boylston st., and many others. In fixing upon a name for a new court or street, it would be well for the person naming it to examine the list of streets, &c. in the Directory, and see that there is no other of a similar name to that they propose to use.
