FAMILY MEDAL SEWING MACHINES, WHEELER & WILSON'S Premium Family Sewing Machines.
The unqualified preference accorded by the best judges, to these invaluable machines, is sufficient proof of their superiority ; and this verdict has been signally confirmed by the public, marking their success with unanimous approval. These machines are the only ones whose original view was Family Use,-the entire design being expressly adapted to that purpose, and not accidentally applied to this object because unsuccessful in others. The numerous and important advantages peculiar to them, are fully recognized ; the simplicity, the rapid and almost noiseless move- ment,-the unegalled beauty and durability of their work, are points which cannot fail to commeud them to all who need the services of that useful instrument, a Complete Family Sewing Machine. BOSTON: ADAMS, SAMPSON & CO., No. 91 WASHINGTON STREET. JULY 1, 1858.
Entered according to Act of Congress. in the year 1858, by ADAMS, SAMPSON & Co. in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Massachusetts. DAMKELL & MOORE, Printers, 16 Devonshire Street, Boston.
PREFACE.
The fifty-fourth issue of the Boston Directory comes to the public appearing no doubt to the casual observer, very much in all respects like its predecessor ; but those who have occasion to refer to it for information, will find no page that does not record numerous and important ehanges.
The migratory tendency of a portion of our population and the never failing hand of death, have taken from our last record some 14,000 names, while a little more than 15,000 new ones have come to fill their places, giving about 1,200 increase.
Beside the essential changes of appearance and disappearance, the many thousands of removals within the city and of other changes, all serve to give the last Directory somewhat of the character of a last year's almanac, and to render the new one a most necessary appendage for every store and counting-room.
The price of the Boston Directory ($1.50) will compare favorably with any others that are published, - the New Orleans costing $3.00, -- the Baltimore $2.00, and the Washington $2 00, neither of which contains a many names as the Boston, - while in New York it is necessary to buy three books, viz: the General Directory, $2 50; the Business rectory, $1.00 ; and the Firm Directory, $1.00, making the whole cost $4.50, in order to get all the classes of informa- tion that are given in the Boston Directory.
