BY JOHN FORD, PUBLISHER OF THE CAMBRIDGE CHRONICLE.
CAMBRIDGE : PRINTED AT THE CHRONICLE OFFICE. 1850.
Gift of Ere Abbot, Jr
PREFACE.
We are now enabled to present to our fellow citizens and the public the third number of the " Cambridge Directory and Alına- nac." Several important additions have been made, and improve- ments adopted, which, we trust, will be satisfactory to our patrons. Two or three items are worthy of notice.
The statistical matter presented on our Calendar pages relate exclusively to incidents in the history of Cambridge, and were pre- pared expressly for this work. The concise history of our Schools and Schoolhouses will, we doubt not, be found highly interesting. The detailed account of the Schools in the third Ward was pre- pared by J. S. LADD, Esq , of the School Committee, and embodies an amount of highly valuable and useful information.
We have been at considerable pains to prepare the sketches of the different religions Societies, places of worship, &c. We ac- knowledge our indebtedness to the several clergymen and others, for the facilities and information furnished us; and we only regret that time and space does not allow us to present a more detailed history. From some of the societies we have been unable to obtain the necessary facts, which accounts for their non-appearance.
The utmost care has been made use of in obtaining the names of the citizens, and no pains has been spared to render the " Directo- ry " as complete as possible. An improvement has been adopted in the alphabetical arrangement of the given names, which will be found to add greatly to the convenience of the work. So far as we have been able to obtain them, we have inserted the places of busi- ness of those doing business in Boston. We cannot flatter our- selves there are no omissions or errors; but we can say we have taken all reasonable care to prevent them.
We have been at great expense in preparing our Map, as also other portions of the work; and it is hoped our citizens will feel the importance of sustaining our enterprise by a liberal and exten- sive patronage.
Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1849, by JOHN FORD, In the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Mass.
THE CAMBRIDGE ALMANAC, . For the Year 1850.
Being the latter part of the 74th and the beginning of the 75th year of the Independence of the United States of America; and the 6563d year of the Julian Period; and the latter part of the 5610th, and the beginning of the 5611 year since the creation of the world, according to the Jews; and the 2604th year si, ce the foundation of Rome, ac- cording to Varro; and the latter part of the 1206th, and the beginn- ing of the 1267th (lunar) year since the Hegira, or flight of Mahomet.
