PREFACE.
ANOTHER new year brings the period of our annual salutation. We need not say that the appearance of the Cambridge Directory has become an event as necessary and as much to be expected as the advent of the new year itself.
The following pages will indicate some at least of tlie many changes which the past year has wrought. But among them all there is perhaps no more noticeable indica- tion than the abundant evidence which is furnished cf the spirit of healthful progress and prosperity which has pre- vailed. While our limits have been extending, our popu- lation increasing, and our real estate rising in value, there has been no forcing or unnatural urging of our resources. The value of our real property has been steadily increasing, and has not suffered from those spasmodic excitements or depressions to which some communities have been exposed.
The past year has witnessed the opening of the Cam- bridge Athenæum-an institution which promises the most beneficial results to our citizens. Other improvements, general in their nature and important in their influence, are worthy of notice, but our present limits forbid.
We have endeavored to use all possible care in the pre- paration of the following pages, and we doubt not as each year renders the Directory more indispensable to our citi- zens, it will be found to be of increasing value.
We regret to be compelled to add that the enterprise has as yet been far less profitable to us than to the public, and should our sales prove as limited the present year as for- merly, we shall be forced to raise the price of the next number. The difficulty would be, however, entirely ob- viated should we be able to place one copy-which we most certainly should do-in each family in the city.
Among the changes which have been made since last year, we may notice the addition of one thousand eight hundred and twenty eight new names, and seven hundred and twenty six alterations, which changes show the impor- tance of a new issue of the Directory every year.
Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1851, by JOHN FORD, In the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Mass.
