CAMBRIDGE: PUBLISHED BY J. D. BALDWIN, At the Chronicle Office. 1859.

PREFACE.

WE present to the citizens of Cambridge, the tenth vol- ume of the Cambridge Directory. It will be seen that the number of names is about the same as two years ago, al- though a large proportion of those who were then here as operatives at the various business establishments, have left the city in consequence of the partial suspension of business during the past twelve or eighteen months. This shows a large increase of permanent inhabitants of the city. A revival of business will bring back those who have left, or bring others to fill their places.

We have spared neither pains nor expense to make this volume of the Directory correct. It will be noticed, that much inconvenience would be avoided if our houses were all numbered, and if there were not several cases of two or three streets with the same name. It is desirable that the City Government should remove these causes of inconve- nience and confusion ; and we hope it will consider the im- portance of doing so.

Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1858, by J. D. BALDWIN,

In the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Massachusetts
