INTRODUCTORY.
We present the twenty-fourth number of the Cambridge City Directory, with a consciousness of having spared no pains in render- ing it as perfect as it is possible for such a work to be, and we submit it to our patrons with confidence, allowing them to judge of its merits.
We cannot, of course, hope to entirely avoid errors, as a work composed of names and figures, and dependent on so many differ- ent persons for correctness, must, of necessity, contain some mis- takes in spelling, etc .; but we feel confident that our work will compare favorably with directories of other cities in any part of the country.
The flattering growth of the city, as shown by contrasting the number of pages in the present work with those contained in our issue of last year, is a matter worthy of congratulation to every person interested in the prosperity of our thriving municipality.
Last year's directory contained 15,650 names, while the present one contains 16,305, and on the usual basis of three and one- fourth persons to each name, gives a population of 52,989.
The Lowell City Directory for 1874 contained 13,923 names, and the Worcester City Directory for 1874 contained 17,598 names, which apparently shows that Cambridge ranks third in population in the list of Massachusetts cities.
Extending our congratulations, and thanking our patrons for liberal encouragement, we submit our work, trusting it will fully justify all we expect of it.
