INTRODUCTORY.

THE CAMBRIDGE DIRECTORY for 1883 has been compiled with the greatest care, and we have canvassed every house and business place in order to have all information furnished made as correct as possible, and trust we have succeeded in so doing. We have also been to a great expense in engraving a new map with loca- tion of proposed bridge, Cambridge Hospital, Longfellow Park, Harvard College Park, etc., etc., which we trust will meet with the approval of a deserving municipality.

We wish especially to call the attention of persons using the directory, to the importance of knowing the precise spelling of a name before looking for it, as names, pronounced the same, but spelled in various ways, will appear on different pages, and at quite a distance from each other.

A full directory of Harvard College Professors and Students will be found on page 369.

For the support we receive from the business men of Cambridge. as well as the citizens who do business in Boston, we are under many obligations; also to the officers of the various societies and institutions for information furnished us, we present our thanks.

The following shows the increase in names over last year :

We remain, very respectfully,
