PREFACE.

THE present edition of the Directory, has been compiled with more than usual care, and considerably enlarged.

Its pages are ornamented with the views of twenty-one places o public worship, designed and engraved expressly for the work by MR. GARDNER B. MERRILL, of this city.

The publishers have desired to offer to the citizens of Lowell a reliable and creditable index of the population and business of the city. All the various matters of public interest will be found as usual in its pages.

Since the last edition of the work, the city has commendably commenced the renumbering of the streets, and many have accordingly been renumbered. Before the issue of another Directory, we hope to see it entirely completed.

Our thanks are due to all who have aided in preparing the Directory, and particularly to those business men whose enter- prise has enabled us to add a few ornamental pages to the busi- ness part of the work.

MAYNARD AND NOVES'S BLACK WRITING INK.

The manufacture of this Ink was established in 1816, and the quality has now been tested bythe public for nearly forty years. During this time it has been constantly increasing in public favor and patronage, and is uow the leading article in the country. Those who may be ignorant of its superiority and reputation, are invited to read the following testi- monials, and to make trial of it themselves. When the best judges, after using it twenty and more years, express themselves in one manner con- cerning its superior excellence, it is quite evident that no one need be troubled with bad Ink.

Office of Merchants' Ins. Co. Boston, Nov. 18, 1848. Messrs. Maynard & Noyes,

I have used your Writing Ink for the last sixteen years. In 1840, I gave you a certificate of its excel- Ience, and having continued its use ever since, to my entire satisfaction, my opinion is confirmed in its supe- riority. It flows freely from the pen, and is in all respects the best Ink 1 have ever used. The other officers in the institution agree with me in the opinion here expressed.

GEORGE HOMER, Sec.

Boston, May 27, 1846.

Fortwenty years past I have had occasion to use ink daily, and some- times for the nicest of penmanship; occasionally, necessity or curiosity has led me to make use of the arti- cle made by different individuals,- but I can checrfully state that I have never found any that combined 80 many good qualities as that made by Maynard & Noyes.

N. D. GOULD, Teacher of Penmanship.

Registry Deeds, Boston, Nov. 20,1847. Messrs. Maynard & Noyes,

I have made use of your Writing Ink for the recording of Deeds, & C., the past twenty-five years, and hav- ing found it to suit my wishes and purposes entirely, take pleasure in renewing my testimonial of its su- periority. From the appearance of the Records in my Office, I am sutis- tied it is superior to any I have used, and consider it particularly adapted tor all purposes, where permanency of color is requisite or desirable. It flows well from the pen, and does not mould ; and my oldest Records prove its color to be unalterablu black.

H. ALLINE, RegistDeeds

Boston, Jan. 10, 1848. Messrs. Maynard & Noyes,

Gentlemen,-It is now, I believe, more than twenty years since the School Committee passed an order for using your Black Writing Ink in the City Schools. I have used it during that period, and deem it & first rate article, and cheerfully recommend it to others. It flou's freely from the pen, and increases in blackness after being committed to paper, and the color is durable. I know of no Ink equal to yours, and I have tried many kinds, both English and American.

P. MACKINTOSH, JR., Principal of the Writing Dep. Hancock School.

Boston, Oct. 15,1849. Messrs. Maynard & Noyes,

Gentlemen, - Your note of the 10th inst., asking us to state the length of time we had used your Writing Ink, and our opinion of its quality, was duly received. We have made use of it generally for the last twenty years, and have found it always of satisfactory qual- ity, being free from those objection- able points so troublesome and common in writing liquids gener- ally. Wishing for it a still more extended sale, we are. gentlemen,

Y'r ob't sv'ts, J. M. BEEBE & CO.

Boston Post Office, Deo. 4, 1851. Messrs. Maynard and Noyes. - Gentle- men .- In 1843 I certified to the superior quality of your Writing Ink. I have con- tinned to use it ever since that time, and take pleasure in expressing, as I then did, my entire satisfaction with it. It has now been used in this office more than twenty years. Other inks have during that time been tested, but yours has been in every in- stance preferred. For fluidity, blackness. and permanency, none has been found equal to it. GEO. W. GORDON, P.M.

COPYING INK.

This Ink gives a copy as distinct and perfect as the original, and com- bines all the properties of our Writing Ink. This quality particularly adapts it to Counting House use, as it answers all the purposes for which & Writing Liquid is wanted. Also,

BLUE, RED AND CARMINE INKS.

These Inks for beauty and brilliancy of color are unequalled, For Sale by the Manufacturers, No. 11 Merchants' Row, Boston, and by Stationers and Booksellers generally in the City and States.
