RECAPITULATION. Total amount of capital employed by the above Mills is $13,900,000. Number of Mills, 51. Number of spindles, 349,998. Number of looms, 10,915. Number of females employed, 8,473. The total number of yards manufactured in one week is as follows :- Cotton Cloth, 2,100,000 ; Woollen Cloth, 27,000 ; Carpets, 25,000; Number of rugs, 50; Cot- ton consumed per week, 706,000 pounds ; Wool, 99,000 pounds. Yards, dyed and printed, 390,000.
The annual consumption of anthracite coal is 28,300 tons ; charcoal, 72,800 bushels ; woods, 1,780 cords. Also, 72,217 gallons oil ; 20,000 gallons lard ; 1,464,000 pounds of starch, and 1,545 barrels of flour.
The mills are warmed by steam, and lighted with gas.

The Middlesex Company make use annually of 6,000,000 teasely, 2,000,000 1bs. fine wool, 50,000 lbs. glue, $30,000 worth of dye stuffs, and $13,000 worth of soap.
In addition to the above, the Merrimac Manufacturing Company use 1,000,000 lbs. of madder, 380,000 do. copperas, 60,000 do. alum, 50,000 do. sumac, 40,000 do. soap, 45,000 do. indigo, per annum.
The Lowell Bleachery use 40,000 lbs. indigo, and $40,000 worth of other dyeing materials per year.

LOWELL MACHINE WORKS.
On Revere Street, between Middlesex and Jackson, near Appleton Mills.
Warren Aldrich, Levi B. Tyng, Francis A. Calvert, George Winslow and Joseph W. Wight formed a copartnership, and commenced build- ing machinery, in December, 1815, employing about 30 men. In 1846 Mr. Wight having deceased, and Mr. Winslow wishing to retire from the concern, their interests were purchased by Messrs. Aldrich & Tyng, and the establishment took the business name of Aldrich, Tyng & Co. In January, 1853, L. B. Tyng withdrew, and the remaining partners changed the style of their firm to Aldrich & Calvert, contin- uing the business in their united capacity till December, 1853, when Mr. Calvert sold his interest to W. Aldrich, who is the present pro- prietor of the Works. The average number of workmen is 100, be- sides about 30 men in the connected foundry of F. H. Myrick. Amount of machinery manufactured per annum, $75,000. Amount of castings and bar iron used per annum, $22,500. All other stock for manufacture, $7,500.
WHIPPLE'S GUNPOWDER MANUFACTORY.
The Gunpowder Works were established in 1818 by Moses Hale and Oliver M. Whipple, of Chelmsford (now Lowell), and William Tile- ston, of Boston. The amount of powder manufactured in 1820 was about 80,000 lbs. The Works have been constantly increasing in ca- pacity since they were put into operation, giving employment to a large number of persons. The amount of powder manufactured in 1849 was 900,000 lbs. A large amount of this powder is exported, Number of hands employed, 41.
In 1821, Moses Hale disposed of his interest in the concern to David Hale of Boston, who left the concern in 1827, and commenced his ca- reer in New York as Editor of the Journal of Commerce.
William Tileston disposed of his interest in 1829, since which time the business has been continued by the subscriber.

This Association was organized in 1840, by the several manufacturing companies in Lowell, for the convenience and comfort of persons employed by them respectively, when sick. If the patients are able, they are to pay the superintendent; if not able, the cor- porations from which they go are responsible, and the patients are then responsible to the corporations.
