THE OLDEST AND LARGEST SHORTHAND SCHOOL IN NEW ENGLAND.
By our METHOD all students are enabled with the first Exercise to write ordinary language with from one-sixth to one-tenth as many strokes as the common long-hand writing, and consequently much more rapidly. Each subsequent Exercise enables them to write with fewer strokes than the preceeding one ; therefore. if a student has inclination and opportunity to practice he is CERTAIN to gain in speed, and in from three to six months writing with fewer strokes than any other system, can attain the highest degree of proficiency. For several rea- sons it is easier than any other to read.
Ours is a MODERN METHOD; each step is applied practically as in the modern plan of learning other Arts and Sciences.
"UNIVERSAL PHONOGRAPHIY," our text-book, con- taining a large part of our Method has had such a phenomenal and unprecedented sale that a second Edition had to be published in the same month as the first, and in the second month twice as many as either the first or second Edition. It is rapidly superseding former methods, being taught and used in nearly all sections of the country.
In fact. our Method is more rapid, more legible, more systematic and therefore easier than any other, as attested by the host of "experts" reporting verbatim with it, Court Proceedings, Sermons, Lectures, Bus- iness Men's Letters. etc.
Strongly endorsed by Thomas Hill, D. D., L. L. D., Ex-Pres- ident of Harvard University : R. M. Pulsifer of R. M. Pulsifer & Co .. props., Boston Herald ; Youth's Companion ; N. E. Conservatory of Music ; N. E. Journal of Education ; Popular Educator ; and nearly all the prominent newspapers in the United States.
The best facilities for securing renumeratire positions for our graduates.

PREFACE.
We take pleasure in presenting herewith the SOMER- VILLE CITY DIRECTORY for 1887, the present edition numbering 12 in the regular series. We do not presume to affirm that the work is perfect in every particu- lar. We can only say that we have employed the most reliable canvassers and'have reason to believe that the can- vass has been faithfully done. It is no small undertaking to get correctly the name, residence and business of every citizen in a large and growing community. We especially ask our patrons to remember, that no fixed rules govern the spelling or pronunciation of proper names. In look- ing for a particular name, therefore, one must know how the person himself spells and pronounces it. The observ- ance of this rule will prevent some perplexity and unjust criticisms.
The citizens of Somerville may be congratulated on the fact that their city is having an exceptionally rapid growth, as shown by the following synopsis.

Our directories are placed on file with Messrs. Henry F. Gillig & Co., American Exchange and Reading Room, 449 Strand, Charing Cross, London, W. C., and at 35 Boulevard des Capucines, Paris.
We would express our appreciation of the uniform courtesy extended to our canvassers while engaged in their work.
We remain, very respectfully, W. A. GREENOUGH & CO. Editors, Printers and Publishers.
