DIRECTIONS TO KEY HOLDERS.

When a fire is discovered, go to the nearest box to the fire, pull the hook down and let go : by listening at the box a small bell will be heard, which indicates that the alarm is being given; if possible, wait at the box and direct the firemen to the fire.


Never sound an alarm for fire seen at a distance.


Never open the box except to give an alarm of fire.


Never give a second alarm for the same fire, after the department has arrived, without an order from the officer in command of the fire.


Alarms are given in the following manner : - To an- nounce the existence of a fire from box 35, the bells will strike three blows, a pause, then five blows, thus : III - IIIII.


Signs giving information where keys to the signal boxes are kept, are placed over each box, which citizens are requested to become familiar with, that there may be no delay in sounding an alarm.

Hose companies not responding to a first alarm, will answer to a second alarm from the same box, or first alarm from any other box, while that portion of the De- partment which has answered the alarm is in service.


Two blows on the fire-alarm bells is the signal that the fire is extinguished and the Department dismissed.


Meridian one blow on the alarm bells denotes 12 o'clock, standard.
