For the year ending March 10, 1856.
BOSTON: WILLIAM WHITE, PRINTER TO THE STATE. 1856.
SELECTMEN'S REPORT.
The Selectmen of the town of Weymouth, for the year ending March 10, 1856, submit the following Report :-
In March last, we assigned limits to the several Highway Surveyors, examined all the streets in town, and have di- rected the labors of the Surveyors through the year.
A suitable outlet has been prepared to let off the water that would otherwise accumulate and overflow Broad Street, near the house of Albert J. Bisbee.
The southerly end of Middle Street, from the Town Hall, to widow Leonard Tirrell's, as laid out by the Selectmen, has been let out by sections, worked, accepted and paid for. Whole expense, $952.96.
We have constructed a water-course on the premises of Elias Richards, to carry off the water thrown upon the prem- ises of the Union Bank of Weymouth and Braintree, Elias Richards, the Misses Weston, and F. A. Kingsbury. The course is very wide, walls of large split-stone on good foun- dation, and it cannot fail to answer the purpose for which it was built, for all time to come. Whole expense, $112.
We have, also, at the joint expense of John P. Lovell and the town, built a bank-wall on the southerly side of Station Street. Expense to the town, $64.37.
We have also laid out widenings, straightenings and dis- continuances on Middle Street, between the Town Hall and the house of Elnathan Bates, and awarded land damage, amounting to $225.
We have also caused the widening and straightening on North Street, at Stepping-Stone Bridge, laid out by the County Commissioners eleven years ago, to be worked. The
4
work is well done, accepted and paid for. Whole expense, $466.30.
The guide posts and boards throughout the town have been examined, several new posts have been erected, and , some of the old ones changed ; several new boards have been made and painted, and all of the old ones have been repaired and painted. Whole expense, except for what was done by the Selectmen, $75.11.
The Weymouth Iron Company were notified by us that the bridge covered by plank and gravel on Middle Street, near the house of Thomas Humphrey, was, in our opinion, unsafe. They attended to the matter in a few days, and covered the bridge with stone, according to their original agreement, and it is now perfectly safe.
We have perambulated the town lines between the town and Braintree, Randolph and Hingham, made joint record of the same, and erected one new boundary stone on the Hingham line.
On the 23d of May last, we appointed Josiah Litchfield as Sealer of Weights and Measures, for one year.
We also, on the same day, appointed John H. Willis as principal Weigher of Coal, at the "Landing," and, subse- quently, we appointed, as weighers at large, William G. Nash, Asa B. Wales, E. S. Wright, E. K. Chipman, Zichri Nash, Charles Briggs, and Solomon Lovell.
On May 23, we appointed Amos S. White as agent for the sale of spirituous and intoxicating liquors for the whole town, and have increased his salary from $1 a week to $2.50 a week.
We have Mr. White's statement, showing that on the first day of this month, he had on hand,'in liquors belonging to the town, $58.78, and in cash, $60.56, making a total of $119.34. He also has a lot of liquors, kegs, &c., that were left by Joseph Sherman & Co. The profit charged during the past year, has been thirty per cent. above the original cost.
In accordance with the law requiring Measurers of Grain, we have appointed Leonidas F. Pratt, James Bates, 3d, John
5
G. Rogers, and Melvin French, as measurers, for one year, from August 13, 1855.
We have, in accordance with the requirement of law, taken the census of the town, by which we find that on the first day of June, 1855, the town contained inhabitants, as follows, viz .:-
