REPORT OF THE SELECTMEN.
The Selectmen of the town of Weymouth for the year ending March 21, 1864, respectfully submit the following Report :-
The expenditures of the town during the last year for roads have been limited to the appropriation of three thousand dollars, made for that purpose, and expended under the direction of the Surveyors of Highways; and no new street has been laid out excepting the one to be reported to the annual meeting. The guide-boards remain the same as last year.
Amos S. White, Esq., has been continued during the year as the only agent of the town for the sale of intoxicating liquors, and we append a synopsis of his report, showing the amount of sales made by him.
The condition of the finances of the town, as will appear by the schedule annexed, are in a much more favorable condition than at the close of the last year, a very considerable reduction having been made in the town debt, and a very large proportion of its present amount being funded in a five per cent. loan.
Although we, in common with all loyal citizens, had hoped that the circumstances of the country would have been such as not to require any considerable addition to the number of soldiers already in the field at the commencement of the year, and consequently that our duties would be less arduous than during the previous year, yet the result has been that those duties have been very largely increased, and that the proper discharge of them has become more difficult than at any former period.
Notwithstanding the large number of soldiers furnished by this town from her own citizens in the year 1862, and the unusual demand for labor in all branches of industry, we have the satisfaction of
4
reporting that the quotas of the town, under the two last calls of the President, have been filled, and, with the exception of the substitutes for drafted men, almost wholly from residents of our own town, the number from abroad being an inconsiderable fraction.
But as the present aspect of the war seems to render it probable that an additional number of volunteers will soon be called for, and as the present liberal State and national bounties are to be continued to the 1st day of April next, and as the fund contributed by the citi- zens of this town liable to draft is not yet exhausted, we deem it a favorable opportunity to make such additions to our surplus of volun- teers as shall materially lessen the number to be furnished under a future call, when, perhaps, the pecuniary inducements to volunteers will be less than at the present time.
In the payment of aid to the families of volunteers we have en- deavored to administer the law in the same liberal spirit in which it was enacted, and in several cases we have felt it a duty to add con- siderably to the amount for which we can claim reimbursement from the State.

JAMES HUMPHREY,
Selectmen Z. L. BICKNELL, of NOAH VINING, Weymouth.
REPORT OF THE OVERSEERS OF THE POOR.
The Overseers of the Poor of the Town of Weymouth, for the year ending February 1st, 1864, respectfully ask leave to make the following Report :
At the commencement of the year we contracted with G. W. Pratt to take charge of the Almshouse and Town Farm, for four hundred dollars. His labors will close, by his own request, on the first of April next, much to the regret of the Board of Overseers.
Mr. Pratt as Master, and Mrs. Pratt as Matron, have labored their six years in a faithful, honest, upright manner, to the entire satisfac- tion of the Overseers, and, we believe, of every other person in town. They have always been kind to the inmates, caring for the sick and unfortunate ones under their charge. They leave with the best of feelings of both parties.
